These delicate flowers emerge in the depths of winter, as early as the <strong>1st of January<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By February, snowdrops flower in <strong>woodlands<\/strong>, <strong>parks, <\/strong>and <strong>gardens<\/strong> all over the UK. They&#8217;re <strong>small<\/strong>, measuring just <strong>15cm tall<\/strong>, but their beautiful <strong>white flowers<\/strong> make them easy to spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/au\/discover\/geography\/general-geography\/what-is-climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a>, snowdrops seem to be appearing <strong>earlier and earlier <\/strong>every year \u2013 so keep an eye out from <a href=\"\/au\/discover\/history\/general-history\/facts-about-christmas\/\">Christmas<\/a> onwards!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Woodland wonderland!<\/strong><\/p><p>Other early bloomers, like yellow <strong>primroses<\/strong>, join snowdrops on the forest floor, early in the year. Overhead, some trees will also be blooming \u2013 look out for their long, unusual-looking flowers, which are known as &#8216;<strong>catkins<\/strong>&#8216;! <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ponds-full-of-frogspawn\">Ponds full of frogspawn!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_2.png\" alt=\"Signs of Spring | Tadpole\" class=\"wp-image-171491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_2.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_2-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Many frogs and toads <strong>hibernate <\/strong>during the winter, but by the time spring comes around, they&#8217;re awake and raring to go! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frogspawn (a <strong>jelly-like blob<\/strong> of <strong>amphibian eggs!<\/strong>) starts to appear in <strong>ponds<\/strong>  across the UK from <strong>January<\/strong> onwards. It usually emerges in the <strong>south west of England <\/strong>first, and by <strong>March<\/strong> frogspawn can be found all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only <strong>1 in 50 <\/strong>of these precious eggs will survive to adulthood, which is why frogs lay so many! If they don&#8217;t get gobbled up by a predator, these eggs will grow into tiny <strong>tadpoles<\/strong> \u2013 another sign of spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"blossom-blooming\">Blossom blooming!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nature-3238564.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nature-3238564.png\" alt=\"Signs of Spring | Pink blossom body image\" class=\"wp-image-171510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nature-3238564.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/nature-3238564-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The white flowers of <strong>blackthorn <\/strong>are one of the first blossoms every year \u2013 they appear even before the shrub has leaves! Pink blossoms like <strong>cherry<\/strong> and <strong>apple <\/strong>follow shortly after, and pinkish-white <strong>hawthorn <\/strong>blossom in <strong>May<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blossom trees (and the <strong>fruit<\/strong> that falls from them, after the blossom ends) are an important <strong>habitat <\/strong>and <strong>food source <\/strong>for lots of other animals. <strong>Bees<\/strong>, <strong>caterpillars<\/strong>, <strong>blackbirds<\/strong>, and even mammals like <strong>voles<\/strong> and <strong>badgers<\/strong>, all rely on these trees for <strong>food<\/strong> and <strong>shelter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"buzzing-bees\">Buzzing bees!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_3.png\" alt=\"Signs of Spring | bee approaching flower\" class=\"wp-image-171492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_3.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_3-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Blossoming trees are a sign that it&#8217;s time for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/insects\/honey-bees\/\">bees<\/a>! With the <strong>return of flowering plants and trees<\/strong>, bees emerge from their winter nests and get ready for a new year of <strong>nectar collecting<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The start of spring sees the <strong>return of many other insects<\/strong>, too. As a result, these countries get <strong>more hours of daylight <\/strong>and <strong>warmer temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducksters.com\/holidays\/daylight_saving_day.php\">daylight saving time<\/a><\/strong>, where we all move our clocks <strong>forwards <\/strong>on a specific date in March, and the evenings are suddenly<strong> much sunnier<\/strong> than before! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bluebell-woodlands\">Bluebell woodlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_4.png\" alt=\"Signs of Spring | Bluebell woodland\" class=\"wp-image-171493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_4.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_4-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, over <strong><em>half<\/em> the world&#8217;s population <\/strong>of bluebells live in the UK, and in spring, they&#8217;re out in full force! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>strongly-scented blooms <\/strong>form carpets across <strong>shady woodland floors<\/strong> from <strong>mid-April onwards<\/strong>. Bluebell colonies take a <strong>long time <\/strong>to establish, therefore they&#8217;re often found in <strong>ancient woodland<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bluebell flowers are very <strong>delicate<\/strong>, so it&#8217;s important <strong>not to touch them and to be careful not to trample on them<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re visiting a bluebell wood, be sure to <strong>stick to the path<\/strong>, to keep these fab flowers safe! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"birds-birds-birds\">Birds, birds, birds!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_5.png\" alt=\"Signs of Spring | Swan and her cygnets\" class=\"wp-image-171494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_5.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/SignsOfSpring_5-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Spring is a busy time for parents in the animal kingdom \u2013 and this is particularly true for birds! Spotting a bird&#8217;s <strong>nest<\/strong> is a true sign of spring, but they can be <strong>tricky to see<\/strong>, as many birds<strong> carefully conceal their nests<\/strong> to keep their chicks safe from predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, listen out for the <strong>tuneful birdsong <\/strong>that begins in <strong>March<\/strong>, as birds start to seek out their <strong>mating partners<\/strong>.
