To celebrate, we caught\u00a0up with\u00a0actress Evanna Lynch, best known for playing Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter series, who recently travelled to Kerala, India, with Duncan McNair, founder of the charity Save The Asian Elephants<\/strong>. She tells us what it is that makes elephants so special, this World Elephant Day.<\/strong>..<\/p>\n

Nat Geo Kids: What is it about elephants that makes you love them?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:<\/strong> They are intelligent<\/strong>, social<\/strong> and emotional<\/strong> animals full of love and compassion for their friends and family, and even protective of humans and other species if they find them in trouble!<\/p>\n

Baby elephants are sweet and playful, adult elephants are beautiful and wise. They are huge, powerful animals but when left alone elephants are peaceful, gentle creatures.<\/p>\n

I love how they can multi-task with their trunks<\/strong> to breathe, smell, pick fruit from trees, drink, wash, trumpet and cuddle \u2013 imagine if humans had noses like that!<\/p>\n

Elephants are the most incredible creatures and the world\u2019s largest land mammals<\/strong> and herbivores<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite fact about elephants?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:\u00a0<\/strong>There are so many extraordinary facts to choose! I love how elephants can smell water up to 5 km<\/strong> (3 miles<\/strong>) in distance.<\/p>\n

Elephants communicate with each other up to 10 km<\/strong> (6 miles<\/strong>) away by low-frequency rumbles that they listen to through their feet and up to their ears, which deserves credit for being a superpower!<\/p>\n

Elephants are an essential part of an ecosystem’s plant biodiversity<\/strong> too, because they spread seeds for hundreds of miles via their poop, a natural fertiliser<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Without elephants, other plant and animal species would go extinct<\/strong> too. Elephants make forests come to life.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the difference between African and Asian elephants?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:\u00a0<\/strong>Both male and female African elephants have tusks<\/strong>. Only adult male Asian elephants have tusks. Females only have tushes<\/strong>,\u00a0tiny protruding tusks you can barely see.<\/p>\n

Asian elephants<\/strong> are smaller overall and their ears are shaped like the country India. African elephants<\/strong>\u2019 ears are bigger and shaped like the African continent.<\/p>\n

What led you to support Asian elephants in particular?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:\u00a0<\/strong>Many people think about the threat African elephants face from poachers trying to take their ivory, but we also\u00a0need to fight for Asian elephants\u2019 survival and protection in all the countries where they live, such as India and Thailand.<\/p>\n

The Asian elephant is a highly endangered species with less than 40,000<\/strong> left worldwide, less than a tenth of the African elephant population!<\/p>\n

Sadly, few people know this. They think the main threat to elephants\u2019 existence is ivory. This is true for African elephants, but for Asian elephants, the threat also comes from other factors as well, such as: habitat loss, conflict with humans, and baby elephants being taken from the wild to be used in festivals, circuses, trekking, rides and other photo opportunities with tourists.<\/p>\n

I learned from Save The Asian Elephants<\/strong> (STAE<\/a>) that elephants have to be beaten to be \u201ctamed\u201d for elephant rides and other entertainment. Elephants are wild animals, they only let people ride them because their spirits are broken.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has opened my eyes to how entertainments popular with holidaymakers can be cruel to elephants.\u00a0Next time I go to the incredible and magical India<\/strong> I would like to see wild elephants living free in in their natural habitat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why is World Elephant Day (12 August) an important day?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna: <\/strong>Elephants are being driven to extinction because of humans. It’s very important to raise awareness of the elephant species’\u00a0plight before it’s too late.<\/p>\n

The illegal wildlife trade<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 selling animals taken from their natural homes and environments, or selling items made from animal parts \u2013 urgently\u00a0needs to be stopped to save elephants worldwide.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What would your dream future for elephants look like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:<\/strong> All elephants should live in their herds, free in the wild in protected forests, with \u201celephant corridors\u201d (safe crossings) maintained so they can roam for miles without running into human-elephant conflict.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s not possible for former captive elephants to live in the wild they should live in\u00a0genuine sanctuaries<\/strong>\u00a0where the only human interaction is for the elephants’\u00a0care and best interest.<\/p>\n

No poaching, no beatings, no tricks, no costumes, no riding, no chains and no cages!<\/p>\n

What advice would you give for supporting elephants this World Elephant Day?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Evanna:<\/strong> You would be shocked at how many of your closest friends and family simply don\u2019t know\u00a0the damaging effects of elephants being used for entertainment.<\/p>\n

People only support elephant tourism because they want to be close to a magnificent animal. But when they understand what it takes to \u2018break\u2019 an elephant\u2019s spirit they won\u2019t want anything to do with it.<\/p>\n

Raising awareness<\/strong> among family and friends can make a huge difference.<\/p>\n

If we don\u2019t help elephants, the species won\u2019t exist in the future. Extinction means gone forever.<\/p>\n
