Every four years, some of the world’s best disabled athletes<\/strong> compete in 23 spectacular sporting events<\/strong> at the Paralympic Games<\/strong>! These Paralympic athletes are raring to go, so come on gang, let’s meet some of the youngest sporting superstars<\/strong>…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie Robinson <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Ellie<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Aged just 19<\/strong>, awesome Ellie from Team GB <\/strong>won gold<\/strong> and bronze<\/strong> at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio<\/strong>, for her sport of S6 classification swimming<\/strong>. After this awesome achievement, Ellie was awarded an MBE<\/strong> by the Queen<\/a> – and won BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year<\/strong>, too! She’s going for glory again in Tokyo this year – yay!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUN FACT! <\/p>

Paralympic stars have a range of disabilities, and so to make it fair, the athletes are given different ‘classifications’ for their sports. This allows people with a similar level of impairment to compete against one another. Smart!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Kar\u00e9 Adenegan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

20-year-old <\/strong>wheelchair racer Kar\u00e9 has cerebral palsy<\/strong>, a condition that affects movement and coordination. She made her Paralympic debut in 2016<\/strong>, speeding off with three medals<\/strong> for Team GB! This year she’s hoping to beat her team-mate ‘Hurricane’ Hannah Cockcroft<\/strong> (who has five Paralympic gold medals<\/strong>) in their sport of T34 100m and 800m<\/strong>. Their speedy rivalry<\/strong> in Tokyo is going to be VERY exciting to watch! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cody Everson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

When competitive Cody was paralysed<\/strong> aged 15<\/strong> by a neck injury he received while playing rugby<\/strong>, he decided that being in a wheelchair wasn’t going to stop him keeping up with the game<\/strong>! Despite being just 23 years old<\/strong>, Cody is now co-captain<\/strong> of the New Zealand ‘Wheel Blacks’ Paralympic rugby team<\/strong>. They’re hoping to win Team NZ <\/strong>a shiny gold medal at the Games this year. Good luck, Cody!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUN FACT!<\/p>

Wheelchair rugby is quite different from the rugby played at the Olympics <\/a>– it includes elements of many other sports, including basketball and ice hockey, and is played in mixed teams of four!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Megan Shackleton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Megan<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

After an accident aged nine left her in a wheelchair, sports-mad Megan tried wheelchair basketball<\/strong> and won several national swimming medals<\/strong> before setting her heart on table tennis<\/strong>! This 22-year-old <\/strong>Paralympic athlete is heading to Tokyo from Todmorden<\/strong> in northern England<\/strong> for her Paralympic debut<\/strong>. Go Megan! <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUN FACT!<\/p>

The ‘para’ in ‘Paralympic Games’ means parallel! The Games were given this name to show that the competition for disabled athletes worked side-by-side with the more established Olympic Games. Great!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dylan Littlehales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

22-year-old Dylan <\/strong>has been a rising star in para-canoe<\/strong> since his Olympic debut in Rio<\/strong> 2016<\/strong>! Now, he’s returning to Team Australia’s <\/strong>list of Paralympic athletes in the hope of besting the sixth place<\/strong> he received last time. Can he splash <\/em>past the opposition and into a top spot<\/strong>? We hope so – good luck Dylan! <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUN FACT!<\/p>

Originally, only wheelchair athletes competed in the Paralympic Games (or Stoke Mandeville Games for wheelchair athletes, as they were known then!). However, in 1976 the Games were expanded to include athletes with a much wider range of impairments. Yay!<\/em> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Young<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Team GB’s <\/strong>Thomas was born with a rare genetic condition<\/strong> which affects his balance<\/strong> and coordination<\/strong>, but he didn’t realise he could compete as a Paralympic athlete until three years ago<\/strong>! Since then, the 21-year-old sprinter<\/strong> has raced into the record books, winning gold<\/strong> at the European Championships<\/strong> in June for the T38 100m<\/strong> and T38 200m<\/strong>. Wow!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole Turner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Nicole<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite being the youngest member<\/strong> of Team Ireland<\/strong> at the 2016 Paralympics<\/strong>, Nicole made the final in all five <\/strong>of her swimming events. That’s pretty remarkable for a 14-year-old<\/strong>! Fast forward five years and 19-year-old <\/strong>Nicole, who has a form of dwarfism<\/strong>, is aiming to reach the finals again in Tokyo. Hopefully this time she’ll head home with a medal<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

FUN FACT!<\/p>

Swimmer Trischa Zorn from the USA has won the most medals of any Paralympic athlete. She’s grabbed a whopping 55 medals, including 41 golds! <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
