They like to hibernate<\/strong> in rotting logs<\/strong> or under rocks<\/strong>, and a hibernating colony<\/strong> can contain thousands<\/strong> of ladybirds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When dragonflies<\/strong> first evolved around 300 million years ago<\/strong>, some had wingspans five times larger <\/strong>than the UK’s biggest living species!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragonflies have four wings<\/strong> that they can use independently<\/strong> of each other – helping them fly at top speeds of 30mph<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When hunting<\/strong>, dragonflies catch their prey mid-air<\/strong> with their feet<\/strong>. They then tear off <\/strong>the prey’s wings with their mouths to stop them escaping<\/strong> and then swallow<\/strong> them without ever landing<\/strong>. Yikes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mighty looking stag beetle is quite a sight with its deep purple body <\/strong>and huge metallic bronze mandibles (jaws)<\/strong>! The globally threatened<\/strong> species gets its name because those jaws look just like the antlers<\/strong> of a male deer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stag beetles are the UK\u2019s largest beetle<\/strong>, measuring up to 7.5cm long<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s about the size of an adult\u2019s thumb!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adult males use their huge jaws <\/strong>to fight <\/strong>rivals and impress potential mates<\/strong>, while females dig deep under dead wood <\/strong>to lay up to 21 precious eggs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to British legend<\/strong>, Stag Beetles were believed to summon thunder<\/strong> and lightning storm<\/strong>s. It was also believed they flew around with hot coals<\/strong> in their jaws setting fire to buildings<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
