This was when the Tudors were the ruling family in England.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The first Tudor monarch was <strong>King Henry VII<\/strong> who claimed the throne when his forces defeated <strong>Richard III<\/strong> at the <strong>Battle of Bosworth Field<\/strong> in <strong>1485<\/strong>. Great for teachers, homeschoolers and parents alike!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>3.<\/strong> The Tudor rose was created when Henry VII brought an end to the <strong>Wars of the Roses<\/strong> (an ongoing battle between two royal groups &#8211; the <strong>House of Lancaster<\/strong> and the <strong>House of York<\/strong>).\u00a0 He joined the <strong>White Rose of York<\/strong> with the <strong>Red Rose of Lancaster<\/strong>, creating the\u00a0<strong>Union Rose<\/strong> (or Tudor Rose), which is still used as the floral emblem of England today!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9983\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-6.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-6.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-6-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Following his father&#8217;s death, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/au\/discover\/history\/monarchy\/henry-viii-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Henry VIII<\/strong><\/a> became King of England in <strong>1509<\/strong> and ruled until his death in <strong>1547<\/strong>. Today one of England&#8217;s most famous historical figures, Henry VIII is well known for his six marriages &#8211; and for having two of his wives beheaded!<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Like us today, the Tudors enjoyed eating different types of meat. But without fridges and freezers, they would preserve meat by rubbing salt on it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> People in Tudor times didn\u2019t eat with a fork &#8211; they ate using knives, spoons and their fingers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2321 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-3.jpg\" alt=\"Tudor hornbook\" width=\"260\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-3.jpg 260w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-3-179x300.jpg 179w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> There were few books in Tudor schools, so pupils read from &#8220;<strong>hornbooks<\/strong>&#8221; instead. Pages displaying the alphabet and religious material were attached to wooden boards and covered with a transparent sheet of cow horn.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>8.<\/strong> If you were a child in a Tudor school, you\u2019d better behave! Teachers were very strict and would punish pupils with 50 strokes of the cane. Pupils with wealthy families would often pay for a &#8220;<strong>whipping-boy<\/strong>&#8221; for their child &#8211; if the rich child misbehaved, the whipping-boy received the punishment!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>9.<\/strong> Some of the boardgames the Tudors played are still enjoyed today, such as chess, backgammon and card games!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2322 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-4.jpg\" alt=\"Tudor house\" width=\"592\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-4.jpg 592w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2013\/11\/tudor-facts-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>10.<\/strong>\u00a0Tudor houses are very distinctive and many can still be seen today.\u00a0The houses had a wooden frame with walls made from &#8220;<strong>wattle and daub<\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; a building material consisting of wooden strips covered with mud, clay and wet soil.
