Eleven-year-old Addy is helping to save gorillas \u2014 and she needs your<\/em> help!<\/strong><\/p>\n

After reading a book about endangered mountain gorillas<\/strong>, Addy began launching fundraising events<\/strong> and internet campaigns<\/strong> to raise money and\u00a0spread the word<\/strong> about the threats facing gorillas.<\/p>\n

Addy\u2019s latest project \u2013 #GorillaHi5<\/strong> \u2013 encourages gorilla lovers from around the world to share a selfie giving an \u2018air high-five\u2019<\/strong>, showing support for these awesome apes!<\/p>\n

So far she\u2019s collected nearly 30 selfies<\/strong> from 15 different countries<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 amazing<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Gorillas in trouble!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It’s thought that there are only\u00a01,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild<\/strong>, due to habitat loss<\/strong>, poaching<\/strong>, and\u00a0diseases passed on by humans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We share a whopping\u00a098% of our DNA<\/strong> with the majestic mountain gorilla, which means that many of the diseases that humans carry can easily pass on to gorillas \u2014 who haven\u2019t built up the necessary immunity<\/strong> to protect themselves from these illnesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to get other kids as excited about gorillas and conservation<\/strong> as I am,\u201d said Addy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been really cool to connect with other conservationists. I\u2019ve met other young people trying to make a difference in climate change<\/strong> and animal conservation<\/strong> and it makes me even more confident in what I\u2019m doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fabulous fundraising<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Addy has made posters and t-shirts, sold lemonade and donated all of the funds to gorilla conservation groups<\/strong>. She’s even created her own blog,\u00a0Gorilla Heroes<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Addy also started the\u00a0‘#GorillaPie Challenge’<\/strong> for World Gorilla Day<\/strong> \u2014 the idea being that you get nominated, get \u201cpied,\u201d make a donation, then nominate others!<\/p>\n

She’s even hosted a\u00a0Gorilla Gala<\/strong>\u00a0with gorilla-themed games, crafts, a\u00a0raffle, and a gorilla relay race\u00a0\u2014\u00a0raising over \u00a3700<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
