And the really bad news &#8211; it stays there for a <em>very <\/em>long time. Did you know it takes <strong>over 20 years for a plastic bag to decompose<\/strong> back into nature? And <strong>450 years for a plastic bottle to break down<\/strong>?!&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That&#8217;s why we need to do all we can to <strong>reduce the amount of plastic we use and chuck away<\/strong>. And there&#8217;s lots of simple ways we can do it! Let&#8217;s take a look at some top tips to cut back on plastic at school&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>In your school bag<\/strong>!<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Pencils.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Pencils.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Pencils-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Why not use wooden coloured pencils instead of highlighters, which are often made out of plastic?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) <\/strong>Before buying new pencils, pens and notebooks, check if you have any at home first &#8211; it&#8217;s easy to forget what we&#8217;ve tidied away in drawers and cupboards! You&#8217;ll <strong>reduce your plastic by cutting down on the packaging<\/strong> these items are often wrapped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) <\/strong>Look out for school supplies that come in <strong>plastic-free packaging<\/strong>, like single pencils, erasers and pens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) <\/strong>Buy pencils made of <strong>wood<\/strong> instead of mechanical pencils, which are often made (and packaged in) plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4) <\/strong>If it&#8217;s okay with your teacher, use <strong>coloured pencils<\/strong> or crayons instead of highlighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/au\/primary-resource\/plastic-pollution-primary-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\">Did you know that we have a FREE downloadable Plastic Pollution Primary resource? Great for teachers, homeschoolers and parents alike!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>In the cafeteria<\/strong>!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/lunchbox.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/lunchbox.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/06\/lunchbox-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Why not wrap your lunch and snacks in paper instead of plastic?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) <\/strong>Instead of packing your lunch in plastic bags, use <strong>reusable containers<\/strong>, <strong>cloth sacks<\/strong> or <strong>beeswax wrappers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) <\/strong>For snacks at break and treats at lunch, ask your parents to buy things like nuts, cereal and dried fruit in bulk. You can store them in glass jars for when you need them &#8211;  this way, you&#8217;ll <strong>avoid the plastic-packaging that individual snacks come in<\/strong>. Fab!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) <\/strong>You can also simply pack a <strong>piece of fruit as a snack<\/strong>, such as an apple, banana, or orange &#8212; no plastic wrapping necessary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4) <\/strong>Rather than buying bottles of water or juice, carry your water or squash in a <strong>reusable flask<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> If your school isn&#8217;t already <strong>recycling <\/strong>plastic bottles and utensils, talk to your teachers about how to start. Seeing the rubbish there can help convince your friends to take action, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) <\/strong>When you bring birthday treats to class, ask your parents to bring <strong>reusable cutlery, plates and cups<\/strong> instead of plastic.
