But Paula knows that won&#8217;t protect it from <strong>threats<\/strong> like <strong>poaching<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/au\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/lets-make-a-change-habitat-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">habitat loss<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying elephants for years, she realised science alone wouldn&#8217;t keep them safe from <strong>extinction<\/strong>. She loved reading, and her passion for elephants began at her local library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I found a book called <em><strong>Among the Elephants<\/strong><\/em>, by Iain Douglas-Hamilton,&#8221; Paula remembers. &#8220;It was about his incredible journey studying elephants. I was transported to lands where the night was filled with the thrilling sounds of Africa, and infected with a bug of curiosity about these extraordinary elephants.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas-Hamilton got to know each elephant he studied, learning their <strong>faces<\/strong> and <strong>personalities<\/strong>. It was like nothing Paula had experienced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Though I lived in Kenya, <strong>I had never seen an elephant close up<\/strong>,&#8221; she says. &#8220;They were known as <strong>terrifying<\/strong>, <strong>dangerous<\/strong> <strong>creatures<\/strong>. Yet inside this book there were photos of Iain and his family among the elephants. <strong>I fell in love with them<\/strong>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-BabyEles.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-BabyEles.jpg\" alt=\"paula kahumbu kneels beside two baby elephants in a shady woodland\" class=\"wp-image-303873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-BabyEles.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-BabyEles-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While Paula admired Iain, she couldn&#8217;t imagine being like him. &#8220;He was British, he had studied at Oxford University&#8230; <strong>he was nothing like me<\/strong>,&#8221; she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But later, she spent two weeks at the <strong>Amboseli Trust for Elephants Camp <\/strong>in Amboseli National Park. There, she met two Kenyan women &#8211; <strong>Norah Njiraini<\/strong> and <strong>Soila Saiyalel<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They knew <strong>every elephant in the ecosystem<\/strong> by name, by how they held themselves, and by their personalities,&#8221; Paula says. &#8220;We drove around and I learned how <strong>research<\/strong> is conducted, how you <strong>identify individuals<\/strong>, how you <strong>study behaviour<\/strong>. Here, HRH The Princess Royal presents Paula with her prize.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Hands Off Our Elephants<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying elephants for several years, Paula became the boss of elephant charity <strong>WildlifeDirect<\/strong>. There, she took to the streets of Nairobi, leading a series of <strong>marches<\/strong> that called on the government to <strong>protect<\/strong> <strong>elephants<\/strong> and <strong>rhinos<\/strong> from <strong>illegal<\/strong> <strong>poachers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Poachers illegally kill elephants to take their tusks &#8211; which are made of ivory &#8211; and sell them to produce ornaments, carvings and jewellery. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of people joined the movement, named &#8216;<strong><em>Hands Off Our Elephants<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; \u2013\u00a0and happily, the Kenyan government listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thousands of pounds <\/strong>were donated to help the animals, and train more than <strong>500 new rangers<\/strong>. She shared conservation stories and hoped to inspire other Kenyans to <strong>care about nature<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Called <em><strong>Wildlife Warriors<\/strong><\/em>, it was the <strong>first-ever programme<\/strong> about African wildlife that was made <strong>by an African person, for African audiences<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazingly, <strong>more than half of all Kenyans<\/strong> (over 25 million people) watched it, and it&#8217;s now shown in countries all over the continent!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-WildlifeWarriors.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-WildlifeWarriors.jpg\" alt=\"Paula Kahumbu and a team of wildlife filmmakers pose together for a photo, along with some warriors dressed in traditional costume. They are in the savannah among small bushes and mountains can be seen behind them.\" class=\"wp-image-303881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-WildlifeWarriors.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PaulaKahumbu-WildlifeWarriors-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paula and her <em>Wildlife Warriors <\/em>team filming in the savannah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m sharing my excitement about nature by <strong>making wildlife films <\/strong>and <strong>training African filmmakers<\/strong>,&#8221; Paula explains. &#8220;This means more people will be able to work as <strong>nature filmmakers<\/strong>, and more people can watch <strong>amazing films <\/strong>about our extraordinary nature and culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Paula has also produced an incredible four-part series, <em>Secrets of the Elephants<\/em>, which can be seen on the National Geographic and Disney+ channels! <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An amazing encounter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked Paula to tell us about one of her most memorable elephant experiences&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>I spent many years studying elephants in the wild, and it was very clear that elephants <strong>learn<\/strong> and can tell <strong>who is a friend to them<\/strong>. One day I was guiding the American Ambassador, <strong>Robert Godec<\/strong>, to Amboseli, and we saw the <strong>EB elephant family,<\/strong> which was led by a matriarch named <strong>Enid<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I asked Robert if he wanted to say something to her \u2013\u00a0he looked to the elephants and waved as he whispered &#8216;<strong>Hi, Enid!<\/strong>&#8216; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The family of elephants immediately <strong>stopped grazing<\/strong> and started <strong>rumbling loudly.<\/strong> The<\/em> <em>enormous Enid lifted her head and started <strong>walking back<\/strong> towards our vehicles. Others followed. He was moving off into the bush with a group of other bulls, and as I watched him go, I said &#8216;<strong>Goodbye, Jabulani<\/strong>&#8216;. He stopped, turned, came up to me and <strong>reached his trunk out <\/strong>to touch me. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I knew then that Enid and Jabulani <strong>knew the name<\/strong> we had given them. They <strong>understood our greetings<\/strong> and <strong>how to copy them<\/strong>. I wish humans spoke elephant and could respond to elephants, as they have learned to respond to us with such <strong>dignity<\/strong> and <strong>respect<\/strong>.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">What do you think of Paula Kahumbu&#8217;s awesome work?
