Hamza Yassin interview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NGK: Hi Hamza! What’s the most memorable thing you’ve ever filmed? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hamza: I was trying to capture the breeding season <\/strong>of a white-tailed eagle <\/strong>from start to finish, which I don’t think anyone has done before<\/strong>. The final challenge was to film the chicks jumping out of the nest <\/strong>and there were only two of them<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n

I was knackered<\/strong>, and when I eventually turned up near the last day, one of the chicks had already fledged <\/strong>(left the nest), so the pressure was on <\/strong>to get the shot of the last chick. I ended up staying in the hide <\/strong>from around 18 hours<\/strong>, but we finally managed to film the shot<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGK: Talk about dedication! What’s your top skill? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: I’m great at predicting when animals are going to arrive<\/strong>! For example, ravens<\/strong> have a special call <\/strong>they make when they know a flying predator <\/strong>is coming. I’ll hear that and know that 10\u201315 minutes later an eagle will arrive<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

When it turns up, you might think, ‘Hamza, how did you know that? You’re psychic<\/strong>!’ \u2013 but it’s like clockwork<\/strong>. People always think I’m a genius but I can just read the wildlife around me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGK: That’s so clever! <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: There are loads of situations like that which I always find funny<\/strong>. Another one is if we’re all standing in a field looking for deer<\/strong>, facing one way for a while, then we’ll turn around and they’ll be behind us<\/strong>, staring at us as if to say, ‘What are you guys all looking for?!’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGK: Ha! What’s your favourite animal<\/strong>? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: The silverback gorilla<\/a><\/strong>. They put on all of this muscle <\/strong>and move away from their family <\/strong>to find their own troop<\/strong>. They’re too heavy <\/strong>to sleep at the tops of trees, so their family<\/strong> sleep at the top of the tree and they sleep at the bottom to protect them<\/strong>. Then in the morning the family all climb down <\/strong>to say hello. I think that’s so cool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

NGK: Awesome! Do you have a top animal fact, too? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: There are loads of interesting facts out there that I love, but one of my favourite animal facts is that wombats<\/a> have square poos!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGK: Cool! What advice would you give to a kid who’s interested in wildlife photography? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: Follow your dream <\/strong>and don’t focus on the equipment <\/strong>– focus on the wildlife<\/strong>. Anyone who’s four metres away from an animal can press record; the tricky part is getting that close without them realising you’re there<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

Understanding animals’ behaviour <\/strong>will allow you to get up close and personal, so learn the wildlife around you<\/strong>. Become a nerd! I’m a nerd and I don’t mind saying it \u2013 we need nerds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGK: You’re also the ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland. Can you tell us about that?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

H: I<\/strong> struggled at school<\/strong> but managed to get the help I needed <\/strong>for my dyslexia <\/strong>– and now I’ve written a book! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had weekly meetings <\/strong>with my writer Catherine <\/strong>– and we talked about all of the animals <\/strong>we wanted to include in the book, the best facts <\/strong>and my experiences of filming<\/strong>. We recorded everything <\/strong>and then we shaped the text<\/strong>. I think my dyslexia helps me see the world differently<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m the cameraman <\/strong>I am today because of my dyslexia. If anyone is dyslexic, see it as your superpower<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n
