What is the Windrush Generation?<\/h2>\n\n\n

The Windrush Generation <\/strong>is the name given to Caribbean settlers<\/strong> who arrived in Britain<\/strong> from 1948 to 1971<\/strong>. It began when 1,027 passengers<\/strong> arrived in Tilbury<\/strong>, Essex<\/strong>, on 22 June 1948<\/strong>, aboard a ship called HMT Empire Windrush<\/strong>. Many were answering a plea for help <\/strong>from the British government<\/strong>, asking them to come and help rebuild<\/strong> the country following World War 2<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people who sailed to Britain were from countries<\/strong> in the Caribbean<\/strong> that were under British rule.<\/strong> Excited by stories they’d heard about the ‘Motherland<\/strong>‘, the passengers arrived feeling optimistic<\/strong>. But, greeted with grey skies<\/strong> and racist treatment<\/strong>, life was more difficult than they’d imagined. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, the Windrush Generation stayed strong<\/strong> and became an important part of British society<\/strong>. They fought for equality<\/strong>, introduced Caribbean culture<\/strong>, and helped shape the country we know today<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s meet four pioneering heroes of the Windrush Generation<\/strong>…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floella Benjamin<\/h2>\n\n\n
\n
\"A<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Born<\/strong>: 23 September 1949<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous for:<\/strong> Campaigning for children’s welfare and starring on kids’ TV!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floella arrived in Britain from Trinidad<\/strong> when she was just ten<\/strong>. After leaving school, she set her sights on becoming Britain’s first Black female bank manager<\/strong>. But then her life took her in a very different direction…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1973<\/strong>, Floella began performing in musicals<\/strong>, and in 1976<\/strong> she got her big break, becoming a TV presenter <\/strong>on the BBC’s<\/strong> children’s show Play School <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 educating kids across the country with her warmth<\/strong> and charm<\/strong>. Ask your parents or grandparents whether they remember watching her on the telly! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of showbiz, Floella has campaigned<\/strong> tirelessly for the welfare<\/strong> of children throughout the world, and for a society where everyone<\/strong>, regardless of their background or skin colour<\/strong>, is treated with respect<\/strong> and fairness<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work earned her a place in the House of Lords<\/strong> in 2010<\/strong> \u2013 a significant position in Britain’s political system<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 and she now has the title Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sam King<\/h2>\n\n\n

Born:<\/strong> 20 February 1926<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Died<\/strong>: 17 June 2016<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous for:<\/strong> Founding the Windrush Foundation charity <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Jamaica<\/strong>, Sam had his life planned out \u2013 he’d work on his family’s<\/strong> farm<\/strong> and then eventually take it over<\/strong>. But when World War 2 <\/strong>broke out, everything changed. Sam had heard stories that if Germany<\/a><\/strong> won they would bring back slavery<\/strong> \u2013 and so, aged 18, he decided to join the Royal Air Force<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After serving, Sam found it hard adjusting to life back in Jamaica, so he decided to sail to the UK <\/strong>and have a fresh start. Arriving on 22 June 1948<\/strong>, he re-joined the RAF before starting a 30-year career <\/strong>with the Royal Mail<\/strong>, rising from postman to manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sam was active in the local community, too \u2013 working on newspapers<\/strong> and helping to organise a Caribbean festival<\/strong>. In 1983<\/strong>, Sam became the first Black Mayor of Southwark <\/strong>in London<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1995<\/strong>, Sam co-founded the Windrush Foundation<\/strong> with Arthur Torrington<\/strong>. This charity fights against discrimination<\/strong>, highlighting the stories<\/strong>, struggles<\/strong> and cultural contributions <\/strong>of Britain’s Caribbean community<\/strong>. No wonder Sam was lovingly called ‘Mr Windrush<\/strong>‘! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Kitchener<\/h2>\n\n\n

Born:<\/strong> 18 April 1922<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Died<\/strong>: 11 February 2000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous for:<\/strong> Bringing Caribbean calypso music to the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aldwyn Roberts <\/strong>\u2013 better known as Lord Kitchener<\/strong> \u2013 was a talented musician<\/strong> from Trinidad<\/strong>. He performed a style of Caribbean music called calypso<\/strong> and became very popular in his homeland<\/strong>. But in 1948<\/strong> he decided to try his luck in England<\/strong>, so he boarded the HMT Empire Windrush<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporters were waiting when the ship docked in Tilbury<\/strong>, and the young Kitchener was filmed singing a brilliant song that he’d written on the four-week voyage<\/strong> \u2013 London is the Place for Me<\/strong><\/em>. Ask a grown-up to look it up on YouTube!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Lord Kitchener’s optimism<\/strong> was short-lived, and his lyrics soon began describing the racism<\/strong> that migrants faced. Despite this unwelcoming environment, Lord Kitchener had a successful career.<\/strong> He performed regularly around the country and on BBC radio<\/strong>, and recorded at some of Britain’s top studios<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord Kitchener returned to Trinidad in 1963<\/strong> and continued writing songs <\/strong>right up until his death. Though his time in the UK was brief, his music helped sow the seeds <\/strong>of the Caribbean influence <\/strong>we see in all kinds of British music to this day \u2013 from reggae<\/strong> and drum & bass<\/strong> to grime<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen Lawrence<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"A<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Born<\/strong>: 24 October 1952<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous for:<\/strong> Campaigning against racism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doreen’s story is about never giving up<\/strong>, even in the face of incredible sadness<\/strong>. Born in Jamaica<\/strong>, she settled in the UK when she was nine<\/strong> and grew up to work in a bank<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, in 1993<\/strong>, tragedy struck when her eldest son, Stephen<\/strong>, was killed<\/strong> in a racist attack<\/strong>. To make things worse, the police failed to prosecute the suspects<\/strong>. It would have been easy for Doreen’s sadness to swallow her up, but she was determined to fight for justice<\/strong> and spent years campaigning<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999<\/strong>, a public inquiry found that the Metropolitan Police<\/strong> was “institutionally racist<\/strong>” and that this was one of the main reasons they’d failed to solve the case \u2013 <\/strong>just as Doreen had believed<\/strong>. Stephen’s killers were eventually jailed in 2012<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brave Doreen could have stopped there, but she continued to fight for change in the police force<\/strong>, and for justice<\/strong> for the victims of other racist crimes<\/strong>. She also created the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust<\/strong> to give young people the opportunities<\/strong> to achieve their dreams<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2003<\/strong>, Doreen was awarded an OBE<\/strong> for her work, and in 2013<\/strong> she was made a member of the House of Lords<\/strong>, too. What an inspiration! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
