Then come meet the famous reindeer-herders\u00a0of the\u00a0Arctic in our fascinating facts about the S<strong>\u00e1mi<\/strong> people&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facts about the S\u00e1mi people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> The <strong>S\u00e1mi <\/strong>are a group of <strong>indigenous people<\/strong> that come from the region of <strong>S\u00e1pmi<\/strong>, which stretches across the northern parts of <strong>Norway<\/strong>, <strong>Sweden<\/strong>, <strong>Finland<\/strong> and the <strong>Kola peninsula<\/strong> in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Russia (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"\/au\/discover\/geography\/countries\/russia-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> No-one is exactly sure how many S\u00e1mi people there are, but estimates range from between <strong>50,000 &#8211; 200,000<\/strong>! On the 6 February every year, they celebrate <strong>S\u00e1mi Peoples Day<\/strong>. They wear traditional clothes, eat traditional food and fly the <strong>S\u00e1mi flag<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Their traditional outfits &#8211; known as the <strong>Gakti<\/strong> &#8211; are worn at parties, festivals, weddings, baptisms, funerals and more. Reindeer meat is used for cooking, leather and fur is used to make shoes and clothing, and antlers and bones make useful tools and decorative objects. The S\u00e1mi are also skilled <strong>fishers<\/strong> and <strong>sheep herders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> Reindeer are so important to the S\u00e1mi way of life, that many people go to a <strong>special university<\/strong> to learn how to care for their animals. A hole in the roof allows smoke from the fire to escape.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6)<\/strong> There are <strong>nine different S\u00e1mi languages<\/strong>! Thankfully, the word &#8216;reindeer&#8217; is the same for <em>all<\/em> S\u00e1mi people, meaning they can communicate with each other about reindeer, no matter what language they&#8217;re speaking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7)<\/strong> Have you seen the movie <em><strong>Frozen II<\/strong><\/em>? Check this out &#8211; the make-believe <strong>Northuldra tribe<\/strong> in the Enchanted Forest are based on the S\u00e1mi people of <strong>northern Norway<\/strong>! During the film, <strong>Elsa<\/strong> and <strong>Anna<\/strong> learn that their mother was one of the Northuldra people, which makes the sisters half Northuldran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Reindeer-facts-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sa\u0301mi people: S\u00e1mi woman inspects reindeer\" class=\"wp-image-35362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Reindeer-facts-1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Reindeer-facts-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8)<\/strong> The S\u00e1mi are <strong>\u2018semi-nomadic\u2019<\/strong>, meaning they don\u2019t stay in the same place all year. S\u00e1mi herders migrate with their reindeer during the seasons, heading to the mountains for winter and coming back together with the community in the summer. On the journey, S\u00e1mi herders will camp in a <strong>traditional tent<\/strong>, called a <strong>lavvo<\/strong>. A lavvo is a circular frame of poles leaning inwards towards a pointy top \u2013 similar in style to the <strong>teepees<\/strong> and <strong>wigwams<\/strong> used by the indigenous people of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9)<\/strong> Traditionally, the S\u00e1mi people lived in a group of families called a &#8216;<strong>siida<\/strong>&#8216;.
