Sadly, these cute creatures are endangered, but with a little help from our friends at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsuk.org\/\" target=\" rel=\" rel=\"noopener\">Marine Conservation Society<\/a>, we&#8217;re going to show you exactly what you can do to help save these incredible creatures.<\/p>\n<h2>Turtles in trouble<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4951\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle.jpg\" alt=\"marine wildlife protection: how you can help our oceans\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turtles have been swimming in our oceans for at least <strong>110 million years! <\/strong>But sadly, human activities threaten turtle populations all over the world. All <strong>seven<\/strong> species are included on the <strong>International Union for the Conservation of Nature&#8217;s (IUCN) Red List of Endangered Species<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the threats?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; Turtles can easily become tangled up in <strong>gill nets and fish traps<\/strong> set inshore close to the nesting beaches. The nets aren&#8217;t there to catch turtles, but they can often get caught in massive drift nets, or hooked on longlines set for tuna and swordfish by mistake.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Marine turtles depend on a variety of habitats at sea, as well as the all-important <strong>nesting beaches<\/strong>. Sadly, these beaches are under pressure to develop by the <strong>tourism industry<\/strong>, making it difficult for turtles to breed.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Ocean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/plastic-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pollution<\/strong><\/a> is harming turtles and their habitat. Chemical pollution, such as oil spills, can harm the turtles and contaminate their environment. Litter such as <strong>plastic bags <\/strong>pose a threat to baby turtles who mistake them for food like jellyfish. Turtles can&#8217;t digest plastic and this can harm them and even kill them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4955\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle2.jpg\" alt=\"marine wildlife protection: how you can help our oceans\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-sea-turtle2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How can I help?<\/h2>\n<p>If we don&#8217;t act now to change the way we treat marine turtles and their habitat we may lose some populations forever.<\/p>\n<p>Through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsuk.org\/support_mcs\/Join+Donate+Adopt\/Adopt?ref=aatng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Adopt-a-Turtle<\/a>\u00a0you can help us support research and conservation projects around the world working hard for a better future for our marine turtles.<\/p>\n<h2>Seahorses are suffering<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-seahorse1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4957\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-seahorse1.jpg\" alt=\"marine wildlife protection: how you can help our oceans\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-seahorse1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/save-the-seahorse1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They may look like tiny horses, but seahorses are actually <strong>fish<\/strong>! Two <strong>seahorse<\/strong> species are found around the British coastline &#8211; the <strong>Spiny Seahorse<\/strong> and the <strong>Short Snouted Seahorse<\/strong> &#8211; and there are more than 40 species worldwide. They&#8217;re the only species on earth in which the <strong>male falls pregnant<\/strong> and carries the babies. Seahorses live in shallow weedy areas, especially <strong>eel grass beds<\/strong>. In winter they move into deeper waters to escape the rough weather. Sadly, seahorses are another marine species that faces threats of extinction.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the threats?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; Over <strong>150 million<\/strong> seahorses are taken from the wild for the <strong>traditional Chinese medicine<\/strong> trade.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Around <strong>one million<\/strong> are taken from the wild to be sold as <strong>souvenirs<\/strong>. Along with shells and starfish they are taken from the sea and left to die in the sun.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The pet trade takes around one million seahorses from the wild for <strong>aquaria<\/strong>.
