They <\/span><span class=\"s1\">noticed that when one edge of a cell was exposed to light<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, their rounded shape focused the light onto the opposite side of the cell.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 512px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-821-1\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/elife-12620-media2.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/elife-12620-media2.mp4\">http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/elife-12620-media2.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Watch the bacteria move toward the laser beam!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The microscopic creatures would then slowly shuffle in the opposite direction to that spot, heading\u00a0<em>toward<\/em>\u00a0the light &#8211; <em>cool<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This lead the scientists to conclude that the tiny bacteria &#8211; which are only 0.003mm wide &#8211; &#8220;see&#8221; in a very similar way to how we do, by<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0using their entire self to focus the light &#8211; like a tiny\u00a0<a href=\"\/discover\/science\/general-science\/human-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human eye<\/a>\u00a0or a mini camera lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bacteria-can-see.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6528\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bacteria-can-see.jpg\" alt=\"Bacteria can see\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bacteria-can-see.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bacteria-can-see-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When our eyes are presented with an image, they focus an upside down version onto the retina (a layer at the back of your eye). This study found that bacteria work in the same way, producing a much blurrier version. They then pull themselves towards the light using pili (tiny hairs on the outside of the cell).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The idea that bacteria can see their world in basically the same way that we do is pretty exciting,&#8221; <\/span><\/strong><\/em><strong><span class=\"s1\">said Professor\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong>Conrad Mullineaux.<\/strong><em><strong> &#8220;Spherical cyanobacteria are probably the world&#8221;s smallest and oldest example of a camera eye,&#8221; <\/strong><\/em><strong>he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Spherical cyanobacteria has been around for a whopping 2.7 billion years, and scientists have been studying bacteria under microscopes for over 340 years, but it wasn&#8217;t until now that they solved the puzzle of how they see light.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Did you know that we have a FREE downloadable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/[COUNTRY_SUF\/primary-resource\/bacteria-primary-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bacteria primary resource<\/a>?
