The west half of the country is dominated by the huge <strong>Andes mountains<\/strong>, with steep slopes and snow-capped peaks. This region is made up of open grasslands, wetlands and dense forests, including the world\u2019s largest rainforest \u2013 the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/places\/amazon-facts\">Amazon<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Bolivia: a land of diversity<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Humans have inhabited the land in Bolivia for thousands of years. During the 15th and 16th centuries, an ancient civilization called the <strong>Inca<\/strong> reigned over the region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6387\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-4.jpg\" alt=\"Bolivia facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-4.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-4-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1538, Spanish <em>conquistadors<\/em> (or \u2018conquerors\u2019) arrived from Europe and gained control of the territory. They stayed in power until 1825, when they were overthrown by the local people, who rebelled against Spanish rule. The new leaders formed an independent country, naming it Bolivia after <strong>Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar<\/strong>, the leader of the rebellion.<\/p>\n<p>Today Bolivia is big on variety. It is home to nearly 11 million people, and has 37 official languages and two capital cities (<strong>La Paz<\/strong> and <strong>Sucre<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-7.jpg\" alt=\"Bolivia facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-7.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bolivia-facts-7-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This incredible country is home to lots of amazing wildlife, too. Bolivia\u2019s animal species include llamas, jaguars, Andean condors, caimans, sloths, piranhas and the emperor tamarin &#8211; a quirky kind of monkey that sports a moustache!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Record-breaking Bolivia!<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bolivia\u2019s land isn\u2019t just diverse &#8211; some of its features have broken records! Located on the border of Peru and Bolivia, <strong>Lake Titicaca<\/strong> is the world\u2019s highest lake that\u2019s deep enough for a boat to sail on. &nbsp;<strong>Salar de Uyuni<\/strong>, found in the southwest of the country, is the world\u2019s largest salt flat. And the world\u2019s highest forest sits more than 3,900m above sea level in Bolivia\u2019s<strong> Sajama National Park<\/strong>.
