They\u2019re the\u00a0<\/span><strong>largest land animals<\/strong> in the world.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">The littlest one trips over his trunk \u2013\u00a0<\/span>he\u2019s still figuring out how to use it! Check out these fascinating facts about elephants, below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6213\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-5.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-5.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-5-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Just like humans,\u00a0<strong>elephants<\/strong>\u00a0have to\u00a0<strong>learn the skills<\/strong>\u00a0they need to survive. His older brothers and sisters keep an eye on him, in between play-fighting and shoving each other with their\u00a0<strong>trunks<\/strong>. The largest female, known as the\u00a0<strong>matriarch<\/strong>, is the wisest and oldest member of the group \u2013 she leads the others and makes decisions, including when and where they eat and drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Babies are already a metre tall at birth! Elephants can grow up to 4 metres tall and live for almost 70 years!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; Some of the sounds elephants make\u00a0<strong>can\u2019t be heard by humans<\/strong>! These low noises travel for more than\u00a0<strong>8 kilometres<\/strong>\u00a0and may be used to tell the males (who live separately) when females are\u00a0ready to mate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211; The ears of an African elephant are in the shape of the\u00a0<strong>African continent<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a handy way to tell them apart from\u00a0<strong><em>Asian<\/em>\u00a0elephants<\/strong>! The ears work as fans and radiate heat to keep the animals cool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8211; An elephant\u2019s famous trunk has around\u00a0100,000\u00a0muscles\u00a0and is used for smelling, feeding, drinking, greetings, spraying and trumpeting! Two finger-like protrusions at the end help them grab things. A spray of dust helps keep\u00a0parasites\u00a0away!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Yellow baboons<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6210\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-2.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">A troop of baboons sit on the parched grass, happily snacking on food. \u201cThat\u2019s elephant dung they\u2019re eating,\u201d David chuckles. \u201cThey tear it apart to get to the undigested seeds inside.\u201d It turns out picking through poop isn\u2019t this aggressive monkey\u2019s worst eating habit. It\u2019s also been known to steal impala babies and eat them <em>alive<\/em>. Nasty!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nile monitors<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-aniamls-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6208\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-aniamls-7.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-aniamls-7.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-aniamls-7-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">How rude! There\u2019s a 2-metre-long reptile sticking its tongue out at us. Africa\u2019s largest lizard is tasting the air to detect food. This greedy predator even eats crocodile eggs. But it has a clever trick to stop its <em>own<\/em> eggs from being gobbled \u2013 it lays them in termite mounds. \u201cWhen the termites see a hole has been made in their nest, they quickly fix it, sealing the eggs safely inside,\u201d explains David. \u201cAbout six to nine months later, when the babies hatch, there\u2019s a delicious meal of termites waiting for them.\u201d Slurp!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">African civets\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6209\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-1.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Driving home in the pitch black, we see a pair of eyes glint in our headlights. It\u2019s an African civet, a secretive nocturnal mammal with a raccoon-like face, a pretty coat (no two are alike) and a crest of fur on its spine that stands up 12 centimetres when threatened. The civet emits a strong scent from glands near its bum, which was used in perfumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Southern ground hornbills<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6214\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-6.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-6.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-6-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019re being eyeballed by some strange, prehistoric-looking creatures. The huge 1,2-metre-tall, red-faced birds are the largest hornbills in the world. They live in groups of around ten, defending territories of up to 100 square kilometres using loud, booming calls to scare off other hornbills. There\u2019s only one breeding pair per group, but the others may help feed the nesting mother and chick in their feather-lined, tree-hole nest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"p1\">Children in the Wilderness<\/h1>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">Check out the Malawi kids becoming\u00a0conservation leaders!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6211\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-3.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-3-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Deforestation<\/strong> is a big problem in Malawi. It\u2019s the third poorest country in the world, and as many people don\u2019t have access to electricity, they cut down trees to use as firewood, or to make charcoal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">A project called <strong>Children in the Wilderness<\/strong> is teaching rural kids about the importance of their forests and wildlife. They help schools set up <strong>Eco-Clubs<\/strong>, where pupils can learn all about their environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-4.jpg\" alt=\"malawi animals\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-4.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/malawi-animals-4-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The most enthusiastic <strong>Eco-Club<\/strong> members get to go on a <strong>Wilderness Safari camp<\/strong> and are later provided with <strong>scholarships<\/strong> so they can afford to go to university. They\u2019re encouraged every step of the way. Many of the first <strong>Children in the Wilderness<\/strong> now have great jobs and are important members of their communities, passing on their environmental knowledge to <strong>future generations<\/strong>.
