Hi Katherine! Your newest novel The Good Thieves<\/em> features circus performers. How did you research the characters?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Good Thieves<\/em> was one of my favourite novels to research \u2013 it’s about heists and law-breaking and wild daring, and the circus becomes part
of the crime. The four children in the group that carry out the heist are an animal-whisperer, a pick-pocket, a trapeze artist, and a girl with a
plan. I took lessons in the flying trapeze, so that I would know the details \u2013 things like which bits of you ache, or how the bar feels against your skin. And I can tell you it is the most amazing sensation \u2013 dropping through the air, and reaching out for someone’s hands as you fall. I loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wowee! Each book you\u2019ve written is set in a totally different location. Do you always spend time in a place before writing about it? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I do! I went to the Amazon rainforest, and swam in the tributaries of the Amazon river with pink wild river dolphins for The Explorer<\/em> \u2013 and I’ve spent quite a lot of time in New York for The Good Thieves<\/em>, searching for
its strangest and most beautiful spots \u2013 like the New York City Library, with the stone lions outside its front steps. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

As someone who usually travels a lot how have you been finding lockdown? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lockdown has been hard, but I have real faith that it won’t last forever \u2013 and that, perhaps, we might be able to snatch some good from it, and learn new ways of treating the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are you most looking forward to visiting once travel restrictions ease? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The place I miss most is Zimbabwe, where I spent part of my childhood, and where my parents live. As soon as I can, I would love to be back there, among the bougainvillea flowers, lizards and huge skies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve heard that you start each day by doing a cartwheel! Is this true?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ha! That was<\/em> true, yes, but a long time ago. I now live in such a tiny flat that if I did a cartwheel I’d hit the wall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you do it?!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a way of waking up \u2013 once you’ve turned upside-down, you’re unlikely to want to climb back into bed! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York City<\/strong>  is home to over  8 million people<\/strong> with backgrounds from all over the world. It\u2019s thought that more than 80 different languages are spoken there<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The famous sculpture<\/strong> that welcomes sea-going travellers to New York City<\/strong>, the Statue of Liberty<\/strong>, was actually gifted<\/strong> to America by France<\/strong> in 1886<\/strong>. Its official name is Liberty Enlightening the World<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

PARIS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dance the rooftops of Paris<\/strong> with Sophie<\/strong> in Rooftoppers<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eiffel Tower<\/strong> was built for the World\u2019s Fair<\/strong> in 1889<\/strong>. Many people thought it was ugly<\/strong> and it was meant to be dismantled<\/strong> after 20 years<\/strong>. But 131 years later<\/strong>, it attracts 7 million visitors<\/strong> a year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 10 billion baguettes<\/strong> are eaten by the French<\/strong> each year. To commemorate their love for these tasty loaves, Paris<\/strong> holds an annual competition to crown the best baguette<\/strong> in the city. Yum!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE AMAZON<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore the depths of the Amazon<\/strong> with Fred<\/strong> in The Explorer<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 400-500 indigenous tribes<\/strong> call the Amazon rainforest<\/strong> home. It\u2019s believed that about 50<\/strong> of these tribes have never had contact with the outside world<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Covering over 5.5 million square kilometres<\/strong> and nine countries<\/strong>, the Amazon<\/strong> is the world\u2019s largest tropical rainforest<\/strong>.  It\u2019s so big that the UK<\/strong> and Ireland<\/strong> would fit into it 17 times<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

RUSSIA<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run with wolves<\/strong> through Russia<\/strong> with Feodora<\/strong> in The Wolf Wilder<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occupying one-tenth<\/strong> of all the land on Earth<\/strong> and spanning 11 time zones<\/strong> and two continents<\/strong> (Europe<\/strong> and Asia<\/strong>), Russia<\/strong> is the world\u2019s biggest country<\/strong>. It also has shores on three oceans<\/strong> (the Atlantic<\/strong>, Pacific<\/strong> and Arctic<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia’s landscape varies from sandy<\/strong> and  frozen deserts<\/strong>, tall mountains<\/strong> and giant marshes<\/strong> to rolling, treeless plains<\/strong> called ‘steppes<\/strong>‘. Its varied habitat is home to snow leopards<\/strong>, polar bears<\/strong> and Siberian
