By the time you get to sit at the top of a rocket you&#8217;ve been <strong>training for six years<\/strong> and have <strong>dealt with all your fear<\/strong>, so you&#8217;re just <strong>bursting to get going<\/strong>. There&#8217;s an amazing sensation as everything <strong>calms down<\/strong> and goes <strong>quiet<\/strong>, and you experience <strong>weightlessness<\/strong>. The craft then has to get up to <strong>400km<\/strong>, where the <strong>ISS<\/strong> is in <strong>orbit<\/strong>, and <strong>dock<\/strong>. When we first arrive there are lots of jobs to do \u2013 <strong>unpacking<\/strong>, <strong>putting vital cargo<\/strong> in the <strong>freezers<\/strong> and <strong>fridges<\/strong>, and a <strong>press conference<\/strong>. But then there&#8217;s a moment where that all stops, the <strong>cameras are switched off<\/strong> and all <strong>six of us <\/strong>just go and have <strong>dinner<\/strong> in the Russian segment \u2013 that&#8217;s when it&#8217;s a bit of a <strong>party<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>WHAT IS THE ISS?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Space Station is a huge microgravity laboratory in orbit 400km above Earth. Built in stages, the first component launched in 1998 and astronauts from all over the world have been living on board since 2000.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>What was the first thing you ate in space?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My commander had put a <strong>bacon sarnie<\/strong> in the food warmer for me while we were waiting to board!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yum! Did you wash it down with a nice cup of tea?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t say <em>nice<\/em>! <strong>Tea<\/strong> comes in <strong>foil pouches<\/strong> with <strong>creamer<\/strong> and <strong>sugar<\/strong> inside. What&#8217;s it like to see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/science\/space\/facts-about-the-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth<\/a> from space?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What really strikes you is what a <strong>beautiful planet<\/strong> it is! First you notice the <strong>blues<\/strong> and <strong>greens<\/strong>, and the <strong>orange<\/strong> of the <strong>deserts<\/strong>. And the longer you&#8217;re up there, the more detail you start to pick out \u2013 <strong>glaciers<\/strong>, <strong>volcanoes<\/strong> and <strong>mountain ranges<\/strong>. In the <strong>daytime<\/strong>, you <strong>don&#8217;t see any signs<\/strong> of <strong>human habitation<\/strong>, but at <strong>night<\/strong> the <strong>lights<\/strong> of <strong>towns<\/strong> and <strong>cities<\/strong> come on and it&#8217;s exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>DID YOU KNOW&#8230;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronauts are like human guinea pigs \u2013 loads of the experiments they do  are on their own bodies!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>The ISS goes around the Earth once every 92 minutes. That&#8217;s so quick! Does it seem fast when you&#8217;re on board?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh yeah <strong>it does \u2013 so fast<\/strong>! But what&#8217;s really spooky is there&#8217;s <strong>no sound<\/strong>. With <strong>transport<\/strong> on <strong>Earth<\/strong>, there are <strong>noises<\/strong> or <strong>vibrations<\/strong>, so you&#8217;re aware there&#8217;s some <strong>force<\/strong> that&#8217;s making you go fast. But on the <strong>ISS<\/strong> you&#8217;re just <strong>gliding, silently<\/strong>, at <strong>27,580kmph<\/strong>! It takes a while to get used to \u2013&nbsp;at the start of the mission I wanted to take some <strong>photos<\/strong> of the <strong>UK<\/strong>. We were over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/geography\/countries\/country-fact-file-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brazil<\/a><\/strong> at the time so I went and had lunch <strong>thinking I&#8217;d have ages<\/strong>, but by the time I got back we were already over the <strong>Himalayas<\/strong> and I&#8217;d<strong> completely missed northern Europe<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-5.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Peake interview\" class=\"wp-image-133223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-5.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-5-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tim gets ready for a spacewalk!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Haha! Did your training prepare you for the reality of life in space?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s an <strong>almost exact replica<\/strong> of the <strong>ISS<\/strong> at the <strong>Johnson Space Center<\/strong> in <strong>Houston<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/geography\/countries\/usa-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA<\/a><\/strong>, and we&#8217;d go there at <strong>7am<\/strong> and <strong>run through<\/strong> a <strong>day in space<\/strong> as if we were really there. It was so useful. The most fun part was the <strong>spacewalk training<\/strong> \u2013 we&#8217;d spend <strong>six hours underwater<\/strong> in our suits in a <strong>swimming pool <\/strong>practising!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>During your 186 days in space you conducted over 250 experiments! Which one was your fave?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a tray of <strong>sticky<\/strong> &#8216;<strong>aerogel<\/strong>&#8216; that had been <strong>outside<\/strong> the ISS for a <strong>year capturing<\/strong> tiny <strong>micro-meteorites<\/strong> that are flying around the solar system. We brought it inside to <strong>analyse<\/strong> and were excited to find <strong>organic compounds<\/strong> \u2013 so the <strong>building blocks of life<\/strong>. So we work hard! On <strong>Sundays<\/strong> we&#8217;d talk to our families for a bit on <strong>video calls<\/strong>, or <strong>take photos<\/strong>, and there&#8217;s a <strong>guitar<\/strong> and a <strong>keyboard<\/strong> up there. On special occasions the crew might <strong>watch a movie<\/strong> together \u2013 we saw <em><strong>Star Wars The Force Awakens<\/strong><\/em>! We even watched <em><strong>Alien<\/strong><\/em>, a <strong>horror film<\/strong> set in <strong>space<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Scary! Talking of aliens, do you think there might be some out there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolutely, <strong>yeah<\/strong>! We&#8217;ve <strong>already identified<\/strong> with a <strong>telescope thousands<\/strong> of <strong>planets<\/strong> that <strong>we think could sustain life<\/strong> of some form or other. If our <strong>short time<\/strong> <strong>span<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t <strong>overlap<\/strong> with any other <strong>intelligent life form&#8217;s time span<\/strong>, we could <strong>miss<\/strong> each other by <strong>billions<\/strong> of <strong>years<\/strong>! And we may be so far away from them that we we&#8217;d never be able to make contact anyway.<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>DID YOU KNOW&#8230;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of his astronaut training, Tim spent seven nights in a cave and 12 days underwater! (Which prepared him well for lockdown, too!)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>A new fragrance has just launched that&#8217;s said to smell like space. What on <em>earth<\/em> does space smell like?!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not particularly pleasant! Some people say It&#8217;s like <strong>burnt toast<\/strong> or <strong>BBQ beef<\/strong>, but to me it smells like <strong>scorched electricity<\/strong> \u2013 like a <strong>spark of static<\/strong> when you take off a jumper. We don&#8217;t smell it that often \u2013 only if we&#8217;re <strong>returning from a space walk<\/strong> and open the <strong>airlock<\/strong> \u2013 then you suddenly get that<strong> whiff of space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>How exactly do you go to the toilet in space?! And what happens to the, er, waste?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s all about keeping things <strong>flowing in the right direction<\/strong>! We have a <strong>hose we pee<\/strong> into which <strong>sucks the liquid<\/strong> into a <strong>container<\/strong>. Then it goes through a brilliant system of <strong>filtration<\/strong> and <strong>purification<\/strong> and, within about <strong>36 hours<\/strong>, almost <strong>90%<\/strong> of it is back as <strong>drinking water<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-6.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Peake interview\" class=\"wp-image-133224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-6.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-6-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tim enjoying some rare downtime!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wow!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For number twos we have a <strong>bag<\/strong> that&#8217;s <strong>perforated<\/strong> like a <strong>tea bag<\/strong> with <strong>millions <\/strong>of<strong> minuscule<\/strong> <strong>holes<\/strong> so that the <strong>air can flow<\/strong> through, but no <strong>solids<\/strong>. So your waste moves in the right direction. Then we <strong>close the bags<\/strong>, pop them into a container and when that&#8217;s full it goes into the <strong>cargo vehicle<\/strong> which is sent back towards Earth and <strong>burns up on re-entry<\/strong> into our <strong>atmosphere<\/strong>. So when you&#8217;re <strong>wishing upon a shooting star<\/strong>, it may actually be\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Astronaut poop! Ha! What were the best types of space food you ate?!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In space, <strong>food doesn&#8217;t sink to the bottom of your stomach<\/strong>, so you <strong>feel full<\/strong> more <strong>quickly<\/strong>. That makes it <strong>harder<\/strong> to <strong>maintain your bodyweight<\/strong>, so we&#8217;re encouraged to <strong>eat more<\/strong> \u2013 and there are loads of <strong>sweet treats<\/strong> to enjoy. After dinner we have <strong>desserts<\/strong> like <strong>sticky toffee pie<\/strong>, <strong>maple muffin pancakes<\/strong> and <strong>rhubarb crumble<\/strong>. They&#8217;re all in foil packets that we heat up but they <strong>taste fantastic<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>DID YOU KNOW&#8230;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spacesuits work as mini Space Stations \u2013 they provide oxygen and water and keep astronauts cool and safe from radiation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Yum! In space, you need to exercise everyday. But it&#8217;s not because of all the puddings is it?!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No! Because our <strong>bodies<\/strong> are so brilliant, they <strong>quickly adjust<\/strong> to being in a <strong>weightless environment<\/strong>. So rather than getting sick, your <strong>body<\/strong> starts <strong>changing<\/strong>, turning itself into the <strong>perfect<\/strong> <strong>body<\/strong> for <strong>weightlessness<\/strong>. It <strong>doesn&#8217;t need muscles<\/strong>, so the muscles become <strong>weaker<\/strong> and <strong>shrink<\/strong>. It doesn&#8217;t need <strong>bones<\/strong>, so they <strong>lose density<\/strong>. Of course, we don&#8217;t want that to happen \u2013 we need to <strong>remain fit<\/strong> for <strong>coming back<\/strong> to <strong>Earth<\/strong> \u2013 and that&#8217;s why we have to <strong>exercise<\/strong>, to maintain our <strong>heart muscle size<\/strong>, <strong>muscle mass and bone density<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-8.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Peake interview\" class=\"wp-image-133226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-8.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tim-Peake-interview-8-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tim travelled back to Earth on this Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When you got back to Earth, how long did it take your body to become normal again?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first <strong>48 hours<\/strong> I really <strong>didn&#8217;t feel very well<\/strong>. I had <strong>vertigo<\/strong>, my <strong>head was spinning<\/strong> and my <strong>balance wasn&#8217;t quite right<\/strong>. But once I got used to <strong>gravity<\/strong> again I felt fine \u2013&nbsp;I could <strong>walk <\/strong>and was <strong>strong enough<\/strong> to do <strong>everyday activities<\/strong>. But it took about <strong>two months<\/strong> to get back to the <strong>same level of fitness I had before left<\/strong> \u2013 although the flight surgeons say it takes six months. They say that for <strong>every day you spend in space<\/strong> you need a <strong>day of rehabilitation<\/strong> back on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>TOP TIP!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because sunlight reflects off its solar panels, the ISS is the third brightest object in the night sky and is easy to spot if you&#8217;re looking in the right place at the right time. It&#8217;s the most <strong>fascinating planet<\/strong> in the <strong>solar system<\/strong> other than Earth. It&#8217;s got <strong>massive canyons<\/strong> and <strong>huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/volcano-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">volcanoes<\/a><\/strong>, it once had a <strong>liquid ocean<\/strong>, and there&#8217;s enough <strong>ice<\/strong> on Mars to <strong>cover the entire planet in water<\/strong>! I think Mars has got some <strong>fascinating stories<\/strong> to tell, and hopefully, in my lifetime, we&#8217;ll be able to <strong>unlock some of the secrets<\/strong> that the planet holds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s hope so.
