Well, gang, it&#8217;s palm oil<em> \u2013 <\/em>and you can find it almost <em>everywhere<\/em>! But what is palm oil, and why does it have a bad reputation, when it comes to the planet? Squeezing the fleshy fruit will produce <strong>crude palm oil<\/strong>, while crushing the kernel (seed) of the fruit will produce <strong>palm kernel oil<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oil palm trees are native to <strong>Africa<\/strong> and historically grew in countries to its west and south-west. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were introduced to <strong>Indonesia <\/strong>and <strong>Malaysia.<\/strong> Today, these countries produce over <strong>85% of the global supply<\/strong> of palm oil!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is palm oil used for?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_3.jpg\" alt=\"colourful supermarket shelves are covered in packages\" class=\"wp-image-188705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_3-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Well, the answer is just about everything! Almost <strong>50% of the packaged products <\/strong>in supermarkets contain palm oil, because it&#8217;s such an <strong>adaptable ingredient<\/strong> that can be used in a huge <strong>variety of things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its <strong>texture <\/strong>can help make things <strong>spreadable<\/strong>, it helps give products a <strong>longer shelf-life<\/strong>, and importantly, it has <strong>no odour or colour<\/strong>, so it doesn&#8217;t affect the look or smell of the products it&#8217;s used in. All these benefits make it <em>very<\/em> attractive to manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Check out this list of everyday items you might find at the supermarket. Can you guess which ones contain palm oil?<\/strong><\/li><li>&#8211; Toothpaste<\/li><li>&#8211; Frozen pizza<\/li><li>&#8211; Shampoo<\/li><li>&#8211; Lipstick<\/li><li>&#8211; Biscuits<\/li><li>&#8211; Packaged bread<\/li><li>&#8211; Margarine<\/li><li>&#8211; Ice cream <\/li><li>&#8211; Cereal<\/li><li>&#8211; Soap<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How many did you guess? If you guessed <strong>all of them<\/strong>, then you&#8217;re right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is palm oil bad?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_2.jpg\" alt=\"what is palm oil | a dense plantation full of trees\" class=\"wp-image-188704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/05\/whatispalmoil_2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Before palm oil ends up in your products, oil palm trees have to be grown on a <strong>plantation<\/strong> (an area of land used to farm crops), and that plantation takes up <strong>land.<\/strong> In fact, with global demand for palm oil being so high, oil palm plantations<strong> <\/strong>now <strong>cover<\/strong> <strong><em>huge<\/em> areas <\/strong>of Indonesia and Malaysia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make way for palm oil plantations, huge areas of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/15-cool-things-about-rainforests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rainforest<\/a> are being destroyed<\/strong>. In fact, palm oil production is one of the biggest reasons for deforestation around the world. As forests are torn up, the endangered species that live in them &#8211; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/ten-facts-about-orang-utans\/\">orangutans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/elephant-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elephants<\/a> and gorillas &#8211; suffer, too. If nothing changes, many of these species may soon become extinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s not all, because the cutting down of trees and an increased risk of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/what-is-a-bushfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildfires<\/a><\/strong> on plantations causes lots of <strong>carbon dioxide<\/strong> to be released into the atmosphere. More and more companies around the world are using <strong>sustainable palm oil<\/strong>. This means palm oil that&#8217;s <strong>used and produced<\/strong> in a way that <strong>doesn&#8217;t harm the environment<\/strong>. And others are creating brilliant products that avoid palm oil altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>TOP TIP!<\/p><p>You can check whether a product contains sustainable palm oil by looking for the <strong>RSPO label<\/strong>, which was created by the <em>Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil <\/em>to signal that a product uses responsibly sourced palm oil. It can be a little hard to find, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled! <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also <strong>do your own research <\/strong>and find out which of your favourite products contain<strong> <\/strong>palm oil. If they do and you don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s sustainable or not, then why not <strong>get in contact<\/strong> with the manufacturer, and ask them about it? <em>You<\/em> can make a difference! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalconsumer.org\/palm-oil\/palm-oil-free-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this list<\/a> by the Ethical Consumer.
