History of handwriting<\/h2>\n

The oldest recorded form of handwriting was indented in clay tablets<\/strong> over 5,000 years ago<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Known as Cuneiform writing<\/strong>, it was\u00a0first developed by Sumerian scribes\u00a0around 3200 B.C.<\/strong>\u00a0It started in\u00a0the ancient city of Uruk (which today is known as Iraq) and was\u00a0used to record transactions.<\/p>\n

The language was made up of marks that could be combined in different ways to form syllables.\u00a0The syllables could be put together to form words.<\/p>\n

The Cuneiform writing tradition lasted 3,000 years<\/strong>, and over time it was chiselled<\/strong> into stone objects<\/strong>, as well as indented into clay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Writing with symbols<\/h2>\n

One of the most famous forms of ancient written language is the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The system of writing was developed around 3000 B.C.<\/strong> and used pictures to represent\u00a0sounds.<\/p>\n

Hieroglyphics can be pictures of living creatures, objects used in daily life or symbols. Some are easy to identify, some confusing and some impossible!<\/p>\n

\"Facts<\/a><\/p>\n

For example, in Egyptian, the owl stands for the sound \u201cm\u201d. The Ancient Egyptian symbol for a mouth can mean ‘mouth’, but it\u2019s usually read as the sound \u201cr\u201d.<\/p>\n

On temple walls<\/strong> and papyrus<\/strong>, the writing was mainly divided into columns<\/strong>, which were written to be read top down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But when two hieroglyphs<\/strong> are written next to each other, you read right to left<\/strong>. (that’s the opposite way from how we read and write).<\/p>\n

Even in the present day, not all cultures write in the same way. Some cultures use letters, while others (such as Chinese<\/strong> and Japanese<\/strong> languages) write in symbols.<\/p>\n

\n

Similarly to Ancient Egyptian writing, Chinese, Japanese or Korean scripts can be written horizontally (across) or vertically (top to bottom)!<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Other modern languages, such as Arabic<\/strong>, Hebrew<\/strong>, Persian<\/strong> and Urdu<\/strong> are written \u00a0to be read from right to left \u00a0— the opposite to English!<\/p>\n

Top tips for tip top writing!<\/h2>\n

\"Overhead<\/a><\/p>\n

Something to lean on…\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Did you know, how you sit<\/strong> can affect how you write? It’s best to take a seat at a desk or table, and write sitting up straight (slouching can make your handwriting more wobbly<\/strong>, as it becomes uncomfortable). Leaning on a hard desk can help you keep your paper in one place — and makes it easier to press down on the page with your pen or pencil!<\/p>\n

Go slower!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Slowing down your writing helps with keeping\u00a0control<\/strong> of where your letters begin and end. By slowing down, you have more time to think about how your letters form<\/strong>. If you’re joining up your letters, writing in a rush can make words look jumbled and confusing. Slow and steady wins here!<\/p>\n

\n

Some people can write perfectly using either hand to hold their pen! People with this writing superpower are called\u00a0ambidextrous! Have you given it a go?<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lots of lines…<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Picking the right paper is an important part of perfecting your handwriting. Go for lined paper<\/strong>\u00a0to help you practice the correct size<\/strong> and proportions<\/strong> of your letters.<\/strong> Don’t have any lined paper? Grab a ruler and draw lines on plain paper to help you! Don’t forget you can choose colourful paper too!<\/p>\n

Choose your tools!<\/h3>\n

Try out lots of different types of pens and pencils and see which you find easiest or most comfortable to write with. Felt tip pens<\/strong> are good for creating round and curvy handwriting with soft edges. For neat, joined-up letters try a ball pen, <\/strong>or\u00a0fineliner pens <\/b>have a softer feel when practising handwriting.<\/p>\n

When trying out a pen for the first time, 97% of people write their own name.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A good grasp…<\/h3>\n

Having a strong, steady grip<\/strong> on the\u00a0pen or pencil will help make handwriting a\u00a0lot easier. For a comfortable grip, let the\u00a0pen\/pencil rest near the base of your thumb<\/strong> and hold in place with your\u00a0thumb, index and middle fingers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Top tip for left-handed writers!<\/h3>\n

To help avoid smudging<\/strong>, try holding the pen 3cm<\/strong> from the nib or tip of the pen.<\/p>\n

If you’re still worried about smearing your writing, try covering your work with tissue paper or grease proof as you move your hand across the page — letting it work as a kind of blotter.<\/p>\n

The famous artist Leonardo Da Vinci wrote in a \u2018left handed mirror script\u2019. This means he wrote everything backwards with his left hand, so it could be only be read if you put a mirror alongside it! Have a try yourself! (It’s very tricky!)<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n
