Just think how amazing that is!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">What is engineering?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Engineers <strong>design<\/strong> and <strong>create<\/strong>\u00a0things like\u00a0<strong>machines<\/strong>, <strong>structures<\/strong> and <strong>processes<\/strong>. They use a combination of <strong>maths<\/strong> and <strong>science<\/strong> to make these things work (or make them work better!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Engineers change the world around us and come up with <strong>technologies<\/strong> and <strong>creative solutions<\/strong> to make our lives more comfortable, and make the world a better place.\u00a0Let&#8217;s take a look at some of the ways\u00a0<strong>engineering<\/strong> and<strong> technology\u00a0<\/strong>impacts our daily lives, without us even noticing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Four surprising ways <strong>engineering<\/strong> and <strong>technology\u00a0<\/strong>affects our daily lives<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sewers<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b>Without sewers\u00a0our cities would reek of <strong>poop<\/strong>! Before <strong>1858<\/strong>, people living in <strong>London<\/strong> would dump their waste straight into the <strong>River<\/strong> <strong>Thames<\/strong>. But during one hot summer, the city experienced the <strong>Great Stink<\/strong>. This was when blistering sun heated up the <strong>human waste<\/strong> on the river banks, and so a <strong>huge pong,<\/strong> plus nasty diseases like <strong>cholera,<\/strong> spread throughout the city. This convinced the government the employ <strong>civil engineer<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Joseph Bazalgette<\/strong> to create the city&#8217;s first ever <strong>sewerage system<\/strong>. Thanks to his work, the pong was gone!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Clothes<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>The job of <strong>chemical engineers<\/strong> is to change <strong>raw materials<\/strong> into products that we use in everyday life. They help to produce <strong>food and drink<\/strong>, <strong>pharmaceutical<\/strong> products (like tablets and face cream), and even some of the clothes on your back! In <strong>1935<\/strong>, <strong>Wallace Carothers\u00a0<\/strong>discovered that <strong>crude\u00a0oil<\/strong> could be made into a new kind of <strong>plastic<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>fabric<\/strong>\u00a0that was named <strong>nylon<\/strong>. The new material had many useful properties like being <strong>durable<\/strong>, <strong>resistant to heat<\/strong> and easy to <strong>dye<\/strong>. Today it&#8217;s not only used in clothes but everything from carpets to toothbrushes!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Travel<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The <strong>Wright Brothers<\/strong> made the first ever successful flight on\u00a0<strong>17 December 1903<\/strong> in <strong>North Carolina, USA<\/strong>. Their plane travelled just\u00a0<strong>37 meters<\/strong>\u00a0before it hit the ground. It wasn&#8217;t until\u00a0<strong>28\u00a0September 1924 <\/strong>that the first around the world flight took place. The brothers&#8217; skills in <strong>mechanical engineering\u00a0<\/strong>made it possible to travel to foreign countries in a matter of hours, making the world seem like a much smaller place!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Mobile phones<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>The first <strong>programmable electric computer<\/strong> was developed in\u00a0<strong>1943<\/strong> so that\u00a0<strong>British code breakers<\/strong> could read secret <strong>German messages\u00a0<\/strong>during <strong>World War Two<\/strong>. It was the size of a <strong>living room<\/strong>. Since then, <strong>electronics engineers\u00a0<\/strong>have continued to develop <strong>quicker<\/strong> and <strong>smaller<\/strong> <strong>technologies<\/strong>, so that these days, you can fit your very own supercomputer (a <strong>mobile phone<\/strong>) in your pocket. Amazing!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_____<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Cool jobs in\u00a0engineering and technology<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Engineers affect almost every area of our lives, from our buildings and electronics, to managing our water, gas and electricity supplies. Let&#8217;s take a look at some of the coolest jobs you can do as an engineer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Roller Coaster Engineer<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>Have you ever visited a<strong> theme park<\/strong> and thought how cool it would be to create your own <strong>roller coaster<\/strong>? Well that&#8217;s the job of engineers &#8211; from <strong>designing<\/strong> them to analysing the\u00a0<strong>speed<\/strong> and <strong>weight<\/strong> of the cars to make sure they are safe and run smoothly. What a scream!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>3D printing specialist<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>The future is all about <strong>3D printing<\/strong>. As the technology becomes more widespread, it&#8217;ll be used to print everything from <strong>food<\/strong> to <strong>prosthetic limbs<\/strong>.\u00a0Engineers such as <strong>software specialists<\/strong> and <strong>machine programmers<\/strong> will be in high demand to run this new tech.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sending machines to space<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>From designing the powerful <strong>rockets<\/strong>\u00a0to send deep into space to building and programming\u00a0<strong>rovers<\/strong> that can sniff out water on planets like <strong>Mars<\/strong>, engineers are at the centre of space exploration and at the heart of what companies like space organisations like <strong>NASA<\/strong> do.
