Amongst these are the Indigenous people of the Arctic, called the &#8216;<strong>Inuits<\/strong>&#8216;. They\u2019ve found ingenious ways to survive in one of the harshest environments on our planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9812 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-3.jpg\" alt=\"Arctic facts\" width=\"514\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-3.jpg 514w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> In 1958, a submarine called the <strong>USS Nautilus<\/strong> sailed beneath the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean. This was proof that the enormous ice sheet rests on water and not land.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> The Arctic is home to lots of wonderful wildlife, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/polar-bear-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polar bears<\/a><\/strong>, Arctic foxes, walruses, seals and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/sea-life\/humpback-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whales<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> One fascinating species found only in the Arctic is the<strong> narwhal<\/strong>, often referred to as the \u2018unicorn of the sea\u2019. Why? Well, male narwhals have a straight tusk projecting from the front of their head that can grow to over 3m in length!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9814 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-5.jpg\" alt=\"Arctic facts\" width=\"514\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-5.jpg 514w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Arctic-facts-5-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> The word &#8216;Arctic&#8217; comes from the Greek word for bear, <strong><em>Arktos<\/em><\/strong>. But this isn\u2019t because of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/polar-bear-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polar bears<\/a><\/strong>! It\u2019s believed the name refers to two constellations that can be seen in the northern sky \u2014 \u2018Ursa Minor\u2019 (Little Bear) and \u2018Ursa Major\u2019 (Great Bear).<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> The ice of the Arctic contains around ten percent of the world\u2019s fresh water. This giant, white, frozen reservoir reflects sunlight, helping keep the region cool.
