But don&#8217;t be mistaken! Reefs are actually made out of <em><strong>living<\/strong><\/em><strong> creatures<\/strong> called coral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where are coral reefs found?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coral reefs can be found all over the world! That&#8217;s before the dinosaurs were alive!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8211; Most coral reefs today are between 5,000 and 10,000 years old. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8211; There are more than 800 different types of hard coral around the world. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8211; The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system on Earth. You can even see it from space! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life in coral reefs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of different types of sea creatures call coral reefs their home &#8211; <strong>giant clams<\/strong>, <strong>starfish<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/sea-life\/green-sea-turtle-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sea turtles<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/discover\/animals\/sea-life\/seahorse-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seahorses<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>eels<\/strong>, <strong>cuttlefish <\/strong>and many, many more. The reefs provide this diverse range of animals with everything they need, including <strong>food<\/strong> and <strong>shelter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/AustraliaReef.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/AustraliaReef.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/AustraliaReef-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The &#8220;Heart Reef&#8221;, which forms part of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A lot of animals who live on the reef <strong>camouflage <\/strong>themselves to blend amongst the coral, either to stay safe from other animals or to hide as they hunt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plants<\/strong> also live on reefs. <strong>Algae <\/strong>live inside soft coral, using sunlight to provide food and help the coral grow. In other areas, <strong>sea grass<\/strong> provides food for sea animals like <strong>dugongs <\/strong>and <strong>turtles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are coral reefs endangered?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest threats to coral reefs are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/ie\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/lets-make-a-change-water-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollution<\/a> <\/strong>spilling into the oceans, <strong>damage from ships and boats<\/strong>, and <strong>climate change<\/strong>, which makes the water <strong>warmer<\/strong> and more <strong>acidic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waste.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waste.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Waste-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pollution is a big threat to all sea wildlife, including coral reefs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Save our coral reefs!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To save our coral reefs, many people are working hard to clean up the pollution on land and in the sea. Some countries have even protected their coral reefs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <strong>help save coral reefs <\/strong>too, by following some simple tips: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Conserve your water use<\/strong>, by turning off taps when you brush your teeth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; If you&#8217;re lucky enough to go diving, <strong>look at the coral &#8211; but don&#8217;t touch <\/strong>it!
