Welcome to the Millennium Seed Bank<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“You’re about to enter the most biodiverse place on the planet<\/strong>,” announces Sharon Balding<\/strong>, the Seed Collections Manager <\/strong>at the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB)<\/strong>. This hi-tech underground research facility is the world’s largest wild seed bank<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

“Inside there are over 39,000 different species <\/strong>of seeds from more than 10 countries<\/strong>,” Sharon says. “That’s over 2.8 BILLION <\/strong>seeds!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She turns a key and the heavy vault door swings open… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Super secure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Encased in half a metre of concrete<\/strong>, the MSB vaults are protected from floods<\/strong>, blasts<\/strong> and radiation<\/strong>, and guarded for 24 hours a day<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

The vault is down a steep metal staircase and through a heavy door<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Just like a regular bank<\/strong>, a seed bank <\/strong>is a safe place<\/strong> to save for the future<\/strong>. But this special vault contains seeds<\/strong>, not money! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A whopping 90% <\/strong>of the UK’s native plant species <\/strong>are stored at the Millennium Seed Bank.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

While it’s super-safe for seeds, the vault isn’t so safe for humans. It’s kept so dry<\/strong> that scientists can only work here for half a day<\/strong>, and must come out regularly to drink water<\/strong>. Gulp! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deep-freeze!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We can feel the chill<\/strong> as we walk around the central workspace<\/strong>, where scientists are peering into microscopes<\/strong>. But the seed stores<\/strong> surrounding this main room are much, much colder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The deep-freeze chambers<\/strong> are kept at -20\u00b0C<\/strong>, so going inside could be deadly!” warns Sharon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peering through the glass, we can see row upon row of sealed glass jars<\/strong>. We notice they’re labelled with numbers<\/strong>, not plant names. <\/p>\n\n\n

“That’s another security feature<\/strong>,” Sharon explains. “It means if the seeds were stolen<\/strong>, the thief wouldn’t know what they were<\/strong>!” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So is the collection worth a lot of money<\/strong>? “It’s invaluable<\/strong>,” says Sharon. “Our future survival <\/strong>depends on these seeds \u2013 without them, vital resources like food<\/strong> and medicines<\/strong> could be lost to us.” Whoa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the MSB’s special conditions<\/strong>, some seeds can stay viable (able to grow) for hundreds of years<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We need seeds, now! <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“People often think that the vault is for a distant, doomsday scenario<\/strong>,” says seed scientist Owen Blake<\/strong>. “But many of the seeds here are already <\/em><\/strong>urgently needed to restore degraded habitat<\/strong>!” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When bushfires<\/a> <\/strong>in Australia<\/a> <\/strong>destroyed a rare herb<\/strong>‘s major habitat in early 2020<\/strong>, the MSB was able to send 250 seeds <\/strong>back to the country to help the plant reestablish in the wild <\/strong>again. Yay! <\/p>\n\n\n

A warming world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, two out of five plant species <\/strong>are threatened with extinction<\/strong>. And as the world heats up <\/strong>due to climate change<\/a><\/strong>, it will be more difficult for native plants to survive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One day it may be too warm for some of the UK’s tree species to grow,” says Owen, who’s part of the UK Tree Seed Collecting Team<\/strong>. “So part of our mission is to find <\/strong>and study trees <\/strong>from other parts of the world<\/strong> that will <\/em>be able to thrive <\/strong>in the UK’s warming environment<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s reassuring to know that these scientists are hard at work solving our planet’s problems! <\/p>\n\n\n

Save plants, save animals! <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Saving plants <\/strong>also helps the rare creatures <\/strong>that rely on them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This endangered wormwood moonshiner beetle <\/strong>likes to live on the equally-endangered field wormwood plant<\/strong>. So scientists used seeds from the MSB <\/strong>to help increase the beetle’s habitat, as part of a project with Buglife<\/strong>. Cool!<\/p>\n\n\n

Meet the seed detectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MSB scientists are on a mission to collect the world’s most precious seeds<\/strong>, protect plants from extinction <\/strong>and even see how seeds get on in outer space<\/strong>! Three experts tell us about their vital work…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Collecting seeds can be dangerous work<\/strong>! In Australia we sometimes have to wear hazmat suits <\/strong>because of the toxic plants <\/strong>we work with \u2013 and during a visit to the Caucasus region<\/strong>, my team had to take a 12-hour detour <\/strong>because of snipers <\/strong>on a disputed border between Armenia <\/strong>and Azerbaijan<\/strong>. It was worth it <\/strong>when we collected seeds from a threatened tree<\/strong>!” <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

“I once ran a conifer seed <\/strong>collecting mission to the West Pacific Coast<\/a> <\/strong>with eight professional tree climbers<\/strong>. It took them 1.5 hours <\/strong>to climb each of these 30m-tall trees<\/strong>! At night, we slept under the stars <\/strong>with bear spray <\/strong>under our pillows. I was there to advise members of the U.S. Forest Service <\/strong>on seed collecting methods for Kew’s Global Seed Bank Project<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n<\/div>

“The seeds my team and I study will be send up to the International Space Station<\/strong>! We’re trying to work out if being exposed to the radiation <\/strong>and extremes of temperature <\/strong>in space will affect their ability to germinate<\/strong>. Once they get back, we’ll monitor <\/strong>how they have been affected. One day, these studies could help humans survive on faraway planets<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
