The Met Office, the UK\u2019s national weather service, offers some of the coolest careers around \u2013 from scientists to weather presenters and tech pros!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The weird <\/strong>and wonderful <\/strong>world of weather <\/strong>is mind-bogglingly cool! Did you know that there are over three million flashes of lightning <\/strong>around the world each day<\/strong>? Or that the coldest temperature <\/strong>ever recorded during a UK winter <\/strong>was a whopping -27.2\u00b0C<\/strong>? Brrr<\/em>, we\u2019re cold just thinking about it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody finds the weather more intriguing than the Met Office. For over 170 years<\/strong>, they\u2019ve been one of the most trusted names in forecasting<\/strong>, helping people plan their days <\/strong>and stay safe <\/strong>\u2013 come rain or shine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a look at some of the many<\/strong>, varied jobs <\/strong>done by people at the Met Office. Maybe one day YOU could work there too<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n

I’m a design and content industrial placement<\/strong>. My role is all about content creation<\/strong>! From working on briefs<\/strong>, research<\/strong>, photography<\/strong>, recording weather forecasts<\/strong> and creating engaging content that educates<\/strong>, informs<\/strong> and promotes environmental awareness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I study film at university<\/strong> and have always been a creative and analytical individual<\/strong>. I saw this industrial placement as an opportunity to apply my skills in a new way<\/strong>. It has been a rewarding experience<\/strong> so far, introducing me to new opportunities<\/strong> within media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Role at the Met Office<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Software Developer<\/strong>, I build computer programmes that store and process observations data<\/strong>. When we say \u201cobservations,\u201d we mean weather that we observe, like when and where lightning strikes <\/strong>happen, or the temperature recorded at a weather station <\/strong>throughout the day and night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Computers have fascinated me from a young age, so I studied Computer Science at secondary school and college<\/strong>. I found a job as a software developer<\/strong> straight after finishing college. I\u2019ve now been at the Met Office for one year, and I\u2019m currently studying Data Science at university<\/strong> alongside work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you count how many times a snowy tree cricket chirps <\/strong>in eight seconds and add five, you can estimate the air temperature (in Celsius). This is called Dolbear\u2019s law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Role at the Met Office<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Data Analyst<\/strong>, I look at the information we collect about the people who work at the Met Office<\/strong>, helping us to make decisions such as ensuring we have the right people in the right jobs<\/strong> and that our employees are happy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never imagined I\u2019d have a \u2018maths job<\/strong>\u2019 but growing up, I loved understanding how things worked and asking \u2018why?<\/strong>\u2019. I didn\u2019t know I could do that as an actual job until I saw the Met Office\u2019s Data Analyst apprenticeship<\/strong>. Doing it means I have been able to learn outside of a classroom and get paid at the same time<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Role at the Met Office<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Level 3 Apprentice Engineer<\/strong> in the Systems Engineering team<\/strong>, I help install and manage meteorological instruments<\/strong> that collect data for weather forecasts <\/strong>and climate records<\/strong>. My time is split between assembling systems in the workshop<\/strong> and installing them nationwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined the Met Office in September 2022<\/strong> after completing my A-levels<\/strong>, starting as a Level 2 Mechatronics apprentice. I successfully completed this course at the end of my first year<\/strong> and progressed to a Level 3 apprenticeship, which I am now one year into<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bolt of lightning<\/strong> can reach temperatures of about 30,000 kelvins (53,540\u00b0F)<\/strong>, which is five times hotter than the surface of the sun<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Role at the Met Office<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Meteorologist<\/strong>, I write weather forecasts<\/strong> for different organisations and people<\/strong>, such as the airports <\/strong>you fly from and the presenters<\/strong> you watch on TV. It\u2019s important to share this information to ensure public safety <\/strong>during storms or heatwaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My fascination with the world around us meant geography<\/strong> was my favourite subject at school. I studied this further at university before then deciding to focus on meteorology and the science behind the weather<\/strong>. The Met Office was the perfect place<\/strong> for me to turn my passion into a job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I use science to understand how the weather in the UK is going to change because of climate change<\/strong>. This helps the Government and businesses get ready to make sure everyone stays as safe as possible<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Career path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I studied maths and physics <\/strong>at university and learned about climate change from the news, books and at school<\/strong>. I was worried about what climate change will mean for our future<\/strong>, so I decided to work at the Met Office where we try to understand the problem better<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
