This super-tough casing acts like a shield to protect them from predators &#8211; some turtles can even tuck their head up inside their shell for extra protection!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/turtle-facts-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3459 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/turtle-facts-3.jpg\" alt=\"turtle facts\" width=\"561\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/turtle-facts-3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/turtle-facts-3-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">4.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Just like your bones, a turtle\u2019s shell is actually part of its skeleton. The turtle\u2019s shell grows with them, so it\u2019s impossible for them to grow too big for it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>6.\u00a0<\/strong>What a turtle eats depends on the environment it lives in. Land-dwelling turtles will munch on <strong>beetles<\/strong>, <strong>fruit<\/strong> and <strong>grass<\/strong>, whereas sea dwellers will gobble everything from <strong>algae <\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>squid<\/strong> and <strong>jellyfish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/turtle-facts-4.gif\" alt=\"turtle facts\" width=\"493\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>7.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Some turtles are <strong>carnivores<\/strong> (meat eaters), others are <strong>herbivores<\/strong> (plant eaters) and some are <strong>omnivores<\/strong> (a mixture of the two!). The oldest ever recorded, named <strong>Tu&#8221;i Malila<\/strong>, of Tonga Island, passed away at the grand old age of <strong>188<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>10.\u00a0<\/strong>Sadly, many species of turtle are endangered! <strong>129<\/strong> of approximately 300\u00a0species of turtle and tortoise on Earth today are either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered, according to the <strong>IUCN<\/strong>.
