Most of us think of penguins as being a polar species<\/strong>, more at home on the ice of Antarctica<\/strong> than the sandy beaches<\/strong>, grassy fields<\/strong> and hills of the Falklands<\/strong>. But these incredible islands in the South Atlantic<\/strong> are home to five species of these fantastic flightless birds\u2026<\/p>\n

\u00a0Gentoo penguin<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Falklands\u2019 sandy shores are home to the largest population of gentoo penguins in the world<\/strong> \u2013 more than 121,000 pairs<\/strong> were counted here during the last census in 2010!<\/p>\n

\"gentoo<\/a><\/p>\n

Living on the Falklands all year round, the 76-cm-tall<\/strong> birds are easy to recognise because of the white bar<\/strong> that stretches across the top of their heads, and their bright orange bills. Super-fast in the sea, they swim at up to 36kmph<\/strong> as they dive for fish. Then, when it\u2019s time for them to return to land, they ride the breakers before stumbling onto the beach.<\/p>\n

We spotted this penguin creche (below) high up on a hill, 2km from the beach! Take a look at the chirpy chicks as they await their penguin parents!<\/p>\n

King Penguin<\/span><\/h2>\n

Back in 1971 there were just 31 breeding pairs<\/strong> of king penguins at Volunteer Green<\/strong> on East Falkland<\/strong> island, but today there are more than 1,500<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s the second-largest<\/strong> and most accessible colony of king penguins in the world. Fortunately, that\u2019s where we\u2019re visiting!<\/p>\n

\"king<\/a><\/p>\n

Thousands of the metre-tall<\/strong> kings are standing together, their young close by at various stages of development. Some adults have pear-shaped white eggs<\/strong> resting on their feet, others have newborn grey chicks<\/strong> nestled between their belly feathers. Older chicks have grown their brown fluffy down,<\/strong> which looks a bit like sheep\u2019s wool. We listen to the raucous call of the adults as they point their bills to the sky<\/strong> and trumpet<\/strong>, advertising their presence. It\u2019s as if the upright, elegant adults are posing for photos, their beautiful orange-yellow necks and bills glowing in the sunshine. \u00a0Take a look for yoursleves\u2026!<\/p>\n

Magellanic penguin<\/span><\/h2>\n

Walking through tussac grass and scrubland on Pebble Island<\/strong> in the north of the archipelago, we spot hundreds of holes dotted around the ground. We stop several metres away from one of them and it\u2019s not long before a stripy head pops out \u2013 it\u2019s a Magellanic penguin<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

\"magellanic<\/a><\/p>\n

Magellanic penguins are shy (but noisy!) birds that live in 2m-deep burrows<\/strong> dug into the peat. Named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan<\/strong>, these small penguins are strong swimmers<\/strong>. They spend the winter feeding along the Patagonian Shelf<\/strong>, a nutrient-rich region in the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong>, off the coast of South America<\/strong>. Then, each September, they return to the same burrows on the Falklands to breed. Incredible!<\/p>\n

We had a giggle watching these mischievous Magellanic chicks pestering their mother\u2026!<\/p>\n

\u00a0Southern rockhopper<\/span><\/h2>\n

The smallest of the Falklands\u2019 penguins, these spiky-haired<\/strong> birds are wonderful to watch as they hop around the rocks with both feet together!<\/p>\n

With 320,000 pairs<\/strong> found across the islands, these amazing penguins return to their cliff-top nests<\/strong> to breed each October. We spend hours on Bleaker Island<\/strong>, watching in awe as the noisy parents feed their fluffy chicks regurgitated squid and fish. It might sound yukky to us, but the chirpy chicks love to guzzle it their fishy feast!<\/p>\n

\"southern<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0Macaroni<\/span><\/h2>\n

These punky dudes are the rarest o<\/strong>f the Falklands\u2019 penguins and can be difficult to spot when they\u2019re hanging out in colonies of rockhoppers. Both species have remarkable funky crests, but macaronis<\/strong>\u2019 tufts are bright yellow and their bodies are bigger.<\/p>\n

\"the<\/a><\/p>\n

Bird experts say some macaronis are breeding with rockhoppers, creating a hybrid species<\/strong>! South Georgia<\/strong>, an island 1,500km to the south-east of the Falklands, is home to a whopping three million macaronis, but there are just 24 pairs<\/strong> on the Falklands.<\/p>\n
