Found deep in the northwestern <strong>Pacific Ocean<\/strong>,Tamu\u2019s summit lies almost 2km <em>below<\/em> the ocean\u2019s surface! The largest <strong>active<\/strong> volcano is <strong>Mauna Loa<\/strong> in <strong>Hawaii<\/strong>. Can a dormant volcano come back to life?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Absolutely! A <strong>dormant<\/strong> volcano is still an <strong>active<\/strong> volcano which can roar back to life with the next eruption. Are there any active volcanoes in the UK and Ireland?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">There are no <strong>active volcanoes<\/strong> in the UK. My family has <strong>grown coffee<\/strong> on its slopes for generations, and I used to spend my summers on the family farm <strong>exploring the volcano<\/strong> with my cousins. Playing in the <strong>fumarole<\/strong> fields ignited my curiosity about the power of Earth\u2019s heat, and it ultimately awoke my passion for Earth sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pic-by-Andres-Ruzo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pic-by-Andres-Ruzo.jpg\" alt=\"Lego Volcano Explorer pic by Andres Ruzo\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pic-by-Andres-Ruzo.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pic-by-Andres-Ruzo-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong>Image:\u00a0Andr\u00e9s Ruzo<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you jumped into a volcano would you travel all the way to the centre of the Earth?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jumping into a volcano would be a <strong>terrible idea<\/strong> \u2013 you\u2019d either belly-flop right into a <strong>lava lake<\/strong> or you\u2019d land on sharp volcanic rocks! Inside the Earth, <strong>temperatures<\/strong> and <strong>pressures<\/strong> quickly become overwhelming \u2013 in fact the temperatures between Earth\u2019s inner and outer core are thought to be around <strong>6,000<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><strong>\u00ba<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>C<\/strong>, which is as <strong>hot as the surface of the Sun<\/strong>! Beyond this, there is still a lot of <strong>molten rock<\/strong> between Earth\u2019s surface and its <strong>core<\/strong>. So definitely <em>don\u2019t<\/em> trust the old ideas of volcanoes serving as open <strong>passageways to the centre of the Earth<\/strong> \u2013 it might get you into trouble!<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pics-by-Andres-Ruzo-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2409\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pics-by-Andres-Ruzo-.jpg\" alt=\"andres ruzo lego volcano explorer\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pics-by-Andres-Ruzo-.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Lego-Volcano-Explorers-pics-by-Andres-Ruzo--300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a>Image:\u00a0Andr\u00e9s Ruzo<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Haha, good advice there we think, thanks Andr\u00e9s!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Did you know&#8230;?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The largest known\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">volcano in our solar\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">system, Olympus Mons,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">is on Mars.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s 25km high\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and is large enough to\u00a0<\/span>cover an area the\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">size of <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/places\/facts-about-france\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>! \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1>5 things every volcanologist needs<\/h1>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Studying volcanoes is a pretty important job &#8211; not to mention dangerous!\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">By measuring a volcano\u2019s activity, we can learn how and why they erupt and how to predict eruptions in the future &#8211; protecting the lives of people who live nearby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Making these investigations requires some pretty serious pieces of kit, not to mention nerves of steel! Check out some of the essential things a volcanologist needs in their inventory\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Seismometer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">This intricate <strong>instrument<\/strong> can measure the motions made by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, known as <strong>seismic waves<\/strong>. From this, scientists can locate and measure the size of the source &#8211;<em> cool!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Rocky ride<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Volcanoes expand over areas of towering <strong>peaks<\/strong>, vast <strong>valleys<\/strong> and dense <strong>woodland<\/strong> and are therefore not the easiest places to get to! You\u2019ll need a fully kitted-out <strong>explorer\u2019s truck<\/strong> to get you from A to B!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">3. Pick axe<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What <em>really<\/em> excites volcanologists? <strong>Rocks<\/strong>! Studying samples of rock found around volcanoes can paint a picture of its history. <strong>Igneous<\/strong> rocks (formed by cooling magma deep inside the earth) often have giant\u00a0<strong>crystals<\/strong> hidden inside!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">4.\u00a0<\/span>Thermal camera<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You may have guessed it, but volcanoes are hot, hot, hot! <strong>Thermal imaging cameras<\/strong> (which allow you to see heat sources) allow volcanologists to see and measure the volcano\u2019s heat from a safe distance, brilliant!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">5.\u00a0<\/span>Laboratory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All that research requires some serious science to break it all down.
