For most people, it takes place every year on <strong>25 December<\/strong> \u2013 the day that the <strong>Roman Catholic Church<\/strong> chose to mark Jesus\u2019 birthday. But what about \u2018<strong>Xmas<\/strong>\u2019? Lots of people think this is just a modern-day abbreviation &#8211; but it actually dates back to the <strong>16th century<\/strong>! But have you wondered how he got the name <strong>Santa Claus<\/strong>? It\u2019s from <em><strong>Sinterklaas<\/strong><\/em>, which means <strong>Saint Nicholas<\/strong> in Dutch, the language of the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong>. In <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/countries\/facts-about-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/a>, for example, a kind witch called <strong>La Befana <\/strong>is said to fly around on a broomstick delivering toys to children! And in <strong>Iceland<\/strong>, children leave shoes under the window for 13 mischievous trolls called the <strong>Yule Lads<\/strong>. At that time, members of the government felt that the religious meaning of Christmas had been forgotten, and so banned the holiday festivities.
