{"id":16011,"date":"2018-03-15T05:41:15","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T05:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/?p=16011"},"modified":"2018-07-24T08:52:05","modified_gmt":"2018-07-24T08:52:05","slug":"dragon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/from-you\/dragon\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Story Club: The Dragon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>The Dragon<\/em> is written by\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Mati Sparksman, aged 11 for Global Story Club.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enter your own story by sending an email to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:editorial@ngkids.com.au\">editorial@ngkids.com.au<\/a>\u00a0with the Subject Line: Global Story Club<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/kids-club\/global-story-club\/dragon\/attachment\/mati\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16013\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16013\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mati.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mati.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/03\/mati-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once I saw a dragon,<br \/>\nwho was tall and red and strong.<br \/>\nHe gave me a friendly smile,<br \/>\nas I was walking fast along.<\/p>\n<p>I was walking on a footpath,<br \/>\ngoing home from school.<br \/>\nWhen he came along and squashed me,<br \/>\nand said I was a fool.<\/p>\n<p>I got back home and wondered,<br \/>\n\u2018bout that very strange dragon.<br \/>\nHe was very, very big,<br \/>\n\u2018cause his belly was saggin\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He was really quite friendly,<br \/>\nthen after a second, not.<br \/>\nWas there something on my face?<br \/>\nWas my nose filled with some snot?<\/p>\n<p>I carried on with my life,<br \/>\nignoring this awkward mess.<br \/>\nI should probably tell my parents,<br \/>\nI think I should address.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey Mum, there was this dragon,<br \/>\nwho said I was a fool.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Honey that is nonsense,<br \/>\ngo on, get to school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why didn\u2019t she believe me?<br \/>\nI don\u2019t tell many lies.<br \/>\nIt was red and strong,<br \/>\nI saw it with my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I finished my day of school,<br \/>\nSix hours is a lot.<br \/>\nEvery minute working hard,<br \/>\nJust having a good shot.<\/p>\n<p>Walking home from school,<br \/>\nFeeling cool and calm.<br \/>\nSuddenly, deja vu,<br \/>\nsomething squashed my arm!<\/p>\n<p>I rapidly look upwards,<br \/>\na predictable surprise.<br \/>\nIt was the strange dragon,<br \/>\nbut this time with a prize.<\/p>\n<p>Not the sort of prize,<br \/>\nyou win at game arcades.<br \/>\nLike with the tokens that spit out,<br \/>\nafter playing fun charades.<\/p>\n<p>It was a cardboard box,<br \/>\ncontaining two objects.<br \/>\nOne piece of paper,<br \/>\nthe other, some chocolates.<\/p>\n<p>Even though suspense<br \/>\nwas killing me inside.<br \/>\nI waited \u2018til I got back home,<br \/>\nWhere the missing pieces would all collide.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the folded paper,<br \/>\nreading in my head.<br \/>\nThe apologetic message,<br \/>\nread in the comfort of my bed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sorry that I squashed you,<br \/>\nI\u2019m only ten years old.<br \/>\nI learnt to fly the other month,<br \/>\nand my esteem\u2019s not very bold.<\/p>\n<p>I know I may look strong,<br \/>\nif I do say so myself.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been training every day,<br \/>\nbut I still fly like an elf.<\/p>\n<p>Something \u2018bout the balance,<br \/>\nthat strength can not improve,<br \/>\nneeds only timely experience,<br \/>\nto finally get the grove.<\/p>\n<p>Also a bad coincidence,<br \/>\nI found out from my parents,<br \/>\nthat in &#8216;your&#8217; world fool means bad.<br \/>\nThis probably makes terrible sense.<\/p>\n<p>Kind regards, Teddy,<br \/>\nI wish you all the best.<br \/>\nP.S. keep imagining,<br \/>\nIt never gives you any less!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Global Story Club<\/em>\u00a0is created in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/storyislandproject.org.au\/\"><em>The\u00a0<\/em><em>Story Island Project<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2013<em>The\u00a0<\/em><em>Story Island Project<\/em>\u00a0is a not-for-profit that uses creative storytelling to engage and connect individuals and communities.\u00a0<em>The\u00a0<\/em><em>Story Island Project\u00a0<\/em>believe that storytelling is at the heart of literacy.
