Read on to learn more about this super important event&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is COP26? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first \u2013&nbsp;what does &#8216;COP26&#8217; even mean?! Well, &#8216;COP&#8217; stands for <strong>&#8216;conference of parties&#8217; <\/strong>\u2013 a meeting that involves lots of <strong>different people<\/strong> working towards the <strong>same<\/strong> <strong>goal<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COP26 is the <strong>26th <\/strong>meeting of members of the &#8216;<strong>United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/strong>&#8216;<strong> <\/strong>(UNFCCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a bit of a mouthful, but all you really need to know is that COP26 is a huge, important meeting all about <strong>taking action against climate change. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It began in 1994, when many <strong>world<\/strong> <strong>leaders <\/strong>became part of the UNFCCC and agreed that their countries would help to <strong>combat<\/strong> <strong>global warming<\/strong>. Since then, a <strong>COP<\/strong> has been held every year so that decision-makers can get together and discuss <strong>what to do next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the meeting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/COP26Glasgow-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/COP26Glasgow-1.jpg\" alt=\"COP26 Glasgow as seen from the sky, looking down over a river and the Scottish Events Campus\" class=\"wp-image-214985\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>COP26 will take place at the <strong>Scottish Events Campus <\/strong>(SEC) in <strong>Glasgow<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/countries\/facts-about-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scotland<\/a>, and will be the biggest meeting of world leaders that the UK has <strong>ever hosted<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, COP takes place in a <strong>different country<\/strong>. <strong>COP25<\/strong> was held in <strong>Madrid<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/countries\/spain-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spain<\/a>, in 2019, during which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/greta-thunberg-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Greta Thunberg<\/strong><\/a> gave a now-famous speech. During this meeting, important <strong>targets for cutting carbon dioxide<\/strong> <strong>emissions<\/strong> were agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COP26 was supposed to take place in <strong>November 2020<\/strong>, but due to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/science\/general-science\/what-is-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic <\/strong>it was <strong>delayed by a year<\/strong>. The conference is now happening on the <strong>1st-12th of November 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who will be at COP26? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from nearly <strong>every country in the world<\/strong>! This includes world leaders like the U.K.&#8217;s Prime Minister, <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong>, and President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> of the U.S.A., along with a whole host of other important people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the <strong>press will attend, <\/strong>to report about the conference on TV, radio and in newspapers. Plus, representatives from <strong>over 2,000 NGOs<\/strong>* are usually present, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">*NGOs are <strong>&#8216;non-governmental organisations<\/strong>&#8216;, such as <em>Action Against Hunger<\/em>, <em>Greenpeace<\/em>, and <em>WWF<\/em> \u2013 all have an <strong>interest <\/strong>in the <strong>outcome <\/strong>of COP26.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What will they talk about? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/COP26Glasgow-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/09\/COP26Glasgow-3.jpg\" alt=\"cop26 glasgow | wind turbines and solar panels\" class=\"wp-image-214987\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At COP meetings, governments from across the globe agree on <strong>targets for the future<\/strong>, with the aim of <strong>reducing greenhouse gases <\/strong>and <strong>protecting the planet<\/strong>. These decisions affect people all over the globe; they help us all work together to become <strong>greener <\/strong>and more <strong>sustainable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five years ago at COP21 in Paris, every member of the UNFCCC signed the <strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong> \u2013 an international commitment to tackle climate change. At COP26, members will <strong>review <\/strong>whether this agreement is working, and highlight any <strong>progress<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">In the Paris Agreement, nations agreed that they would: <\/span><\/p><p>1. Reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and invest in renewable energy sources, like wind and solar power. <\/p><p>2. Prevent global temperatures from warming by more than 2\u00b0C, and try to keep the increase as low as 1.5<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C.<\/p><p>3. Help less-developed countries become more environmentally friendly, by supporting them financially.<\/p><p>4. Review progress on the Agreement every five years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is COP26 important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>COP26 is the <strong>most important COP <\/strong>since 2015, when the Paris Agreement was created. It is an <strong>opportunity <\/strong>for the world to see what has been <strong>achieved <\/strong>since these targets were set &#8211; and <strong>pay attention<\/strong> to what hasn&#8217;t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, there will be <strong>new decisions <\/strong>on how to <strong>cut carbon emissions<\/strong>, and the world will make more <strong>progress <\/strong>on combatting climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The after-effects of the <strong>coronavirus pandemic <\/strong>will also have an impact on COP26. Many governments are now paying <strong>more attention <\/strong>to the environment. There are tonnes of ways to get involved with the UK&#8217;s <strong>&#8216;Year of Climate Action<\/strong>&#8216;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply <strong><em>talking<\/em> about climate change<\/strong> with family and friends can inspire others to learn more about it and why they should care. Or if you want to take your passion one step further, why not <strong>write to your MP<\/strong>?
