Ever wondered why these phases of the Moon happen&#8230; and how? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, here\u2019s the answer \u2013 it doesn\u2019t \u2018change shape\u2019 at all! Let\u2019s take a look at the phases of the Moon\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Phases of the Moon<\/h2>\n<p>The Moon doesn\u2019t emit (give off) light itself, the \u2018<strong>moonlight<\/strong>\u2019 we see is actually the Sun\u2019s light reflected off the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>So, as the <strong>Moon orbits the Earth<\/strong>, the Sun lights up different parts of it, making it seem as if the Moon is changing shape. Once the face of the Moon is fully turned towards the Sun, it\u2019s a <strong>Full Moon<\/strong>, and we see it all. But, as the Moon moves around the Earth, the face pointing towards us gradually becomes hidden from the Sun until we can hardly see it at all \u2013 this is a <strong>New Moon<\/strong>.
