And our amazing planet provides us with the resources we need to grow food, build houses, make clothes, create energy, and so much more! But if Earth is to remain a safe, comfortable place for future generations, we need to use Earth\u2019s resources wisely. Let\u2019s learn more about sustainability\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s the problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past 200 years, humans have been using Earth\u2019s resources in an unsustainable way \u2013 taking from the natural world at a rate that it can&#8217;t recover. In fact, humans currently demand <strong>1.6 times <em>more<\/em> resources than Earth can regenerate<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We build cities, power factories, fuel transport, farm crops and animals, and manufacture all kinds of things. But in doing so, we chop down trees, guzzle up Earth\u2019s limited water, mine huge amounts of metals and minerals and burn billions of tonnes of fossil fuels \u2013 which, once used up, are gone forever\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do we need to live sustainably?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Young-Changemakers-sustainability-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Young-Changemakers-sustainability-2.jpg\" alt=\"Young Changemakers sustainability\" class=\"wp-image-207424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Young-Changemakers-sustainability-2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Young-Changemakers-sustainability-2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This current way of doing things not only puts a strain on Earth\u2019s resources, but it also pollutes the environment \u2013 causing problems we need to fix!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we burn fossil fuels (like oil and gas), chop down forests or breed millions of gassy animals (pew!), pollutant gases are released into the atmosphere (the invisible blanket around the Earth that keeps our temperate stable). These gases are warming up our planet, causing <strong>sea levels to rise<\/strong> and creating more <strong>extreme<\/strong>, <strong>dangerous weather<\/strong>, in a process called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/general-geography\/what-is-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, we&#8217;re producing so much and <strong><em>wasting<\/em> so much<\/strong>, we&#8217;re polluting the environment unnecessarily. Much of the plastic, glass and metal we make is used just once before being chucked away, where it can remain in the natural world for hundreds of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can we do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You got it \u2013 sustainability is the answer! This involves ending our use of fossil fuels switching to clean, green, <strong>renewable energy<\/strong> (such as wind and solar), and moving to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/science\/general-science\/all-about-the-circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circular economy<\/a><\/strong> where we <strong>reduce<\/strong>, <strong>reuse<\/strong> and <strong>recycle<\/strong> more. Thankfully, there are already loads of people around the world working towards a more sustainable way of doing things, so our wonderful planet can continue to <strong>provide for generations to come<\/strong>!
