So the\u00a0first big business arrives \u2013 a mining\u00a0company called Lukrum Industries.\u00a0It\u2019s not long before things get tense. Scientists searching for new life clash\u00a0with Lukrum\u2019s miners and then the\u00a0first natural disaster rocks the colony.<br \/>\nStill, on the bright side, the first\u00a0Martian baby is born\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much do you know\u00a0about the real \u201cRed Planet\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angry\u00a0old names!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To ancient peoples, the most\u00a0striking thing about Mars was its colour,\u00a0caused by the iron-rich soil. Egyptian\u00a0priests called it \u201cHer Desher\u201d, which means\u00a0\u201cThe Red One\u201d. The fiery tint reminded other\u00a0civilisations of blood and war. The ancient<br \/>\nGreeks called the planet Ares after their\u00a0god of war, and the Romans did the same,\u00a0naming it Mars. The planet\u2019s two moons\u00a0were discovered in 1877 by astronomer\u00a0Asaph Hall. He named them Phobos\u00a0and Deimos (Latin for \u201cfear\u201d and<br \/>\n\u201cpanic\u201d) after the horses that\u00a0pulled the god\u2019s chariot!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22395\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2-300x188.jpeg\" alt=\"Mars pic\" width=\"509\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2-300x188.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2-768x480.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2-1024x640.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Mars-2.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time and place\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mars is the fourth planet from\u00a0the Sun, and the second smallest in\u00a0our solar system. Its diameter of 6 779 km is\u00a0just over half of Earth\u2019s. Because of the way<br \/>\nboth planets orbit around the Sun, the best\u00a0time for travelling to Mars comes every two\u00a0years, when Mars and Earth are nearest\u00a0each other \u2013 on 31 July this year, the planets\u00a0were \u201cjust\u201d 57,6 million km apart!\u00a0Amazingly, a year on Mars lasts\u00a0687 Earth days and a day on\u00a0the red planet is 37 minutes\u00a0longer than one on Earth!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mega missions!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were 23 missions to Mars in the\u00a01960s and 1970s \u2013 the first spacecraft to<br \/>\nland on the planet was NASA\u2019s Viking 1\u00a0lander in July 1976. Ten spacecraft have<br \/>\nbeen launched to the planet since 2000 \u2013 the\u00a0Mars rover Opportunity, which landed in\u00a0January 2004, is still exploring the planet!\u00a0NASA is planning an \u201cEarth-independent\u201d\u00a0colony on the planet by the 2030s. And the\u00a0race is on! A separate project, called MarsOne, is aiming to create a colony on Mars\u00a0in the next ten years! Just 24 of the\u00a0202 000 people who applied will be\u00a0selected for the Mars One<br \/>\nmission.
