All the events at the Winter Olympics take place in snow and ice! <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These frosty competitions include <strong>ice skating<\/strong>, <strong>skiing<\/strong>, <strong>snowboarding<\/strong> and more. Some intrepid athletes venture high into the mountains on amazing <strong>cross-country ski races<\/strong>, while others compete indoors at <strong>specially-built venues<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. There were <strong>16 events<\/strong>, including cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and ice hockey! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The Winter Olympics traditionally take place two years after the Summer Olympics. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn&#8217;t always the case. When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/history\/greece\/facts-about-the-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summer Olympic <\/a>Games of 2020 were moved to 2021 due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/science\/general-science\/what-is-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, the <strong>Beijing Winter Olympics<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/countries\/30-cool-facts-about-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China<\/a> followed close behind in 2022!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Dog-sledding featured in the 1932 Winter Olympics, while in the 1928 Olympics, horses demonstrated <strong>skijoring<\/strong> \u2013 an event that involves athletes being towed on skis behind riderless horses. <em>Don&#8217;t try that at home, gang!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Thankfully, women can now compete in all sports at the Winter Olympics! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Marit Bj\u00f8rgen from Norway has won the most medals of any Winter Olympian. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This amazing <strong>cross-country skier<\/strong> has won a whopping <strong>15 medals<\/strong>. She secured her title at the <strong>2014 Winter <\/strong>Olympics, by winning three gold medals! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. So, the Austrian army headed into the nearby mountains and carted down more than <strong>38,200 cubic metres of snow<\/strong> and <strong>20,000 blocks of ice<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Walt Disney was in charge of the opening and closing ceremonies for one memorable Winter Olympics!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These took place in the <strong>Squaw Valley<\/strong>, California, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/nz\/discover\/geography\/countries\/usa-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA<\/a> in <strong>1960<\/strong>. In a quest to make the opening ceremony the most impressive yet, Disney&#8217;s performance included a whopping <strong>3,700 musicians<\/strong>, <strong>2,000 doves<\/strong>, and more than<strong> 30,000 balloons<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
