Although her parents had ten children, only Mary and her brother <strong>Joseph<\/strong> lived to adulthood. It&#8217;s said Mary had a lucky escape when she was a baby.\u00a0 The lady holding her was struck\u00a0by <strong>lightning<\/strong>. Miraculously, little\u00a0Mary survived. In <strong>1811<\/strong>, when Mary was <strong>12<\/strong>, they uncovered a strange <strong>5.2-metre-long skeleton<\/strong>! At the time, people believed that any unrecognisable creatures must have travelled from far-off lands, so scientists simply thought it belonged to a <strong>crocodile<\/strong>. Eventually, though, they realised it was an <strong>ancient species<\/strong>, and it was named <strong>Ichthyosaurus<\/strong> \u2013 meaning \u2018<strong>fish lizard<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/nz\/discover\/science\/nature\/mary-anning-statue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read about the school girl from Lyme Regis who&#8217;s campaigning for a statue of her hero, Mary Anning!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25372 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Mary-Anning-facts-6.jpg\" alt=\"Mary Anning facts: cartoon of Mary Anning discovering the first ever Plesiosaur skeleton\" width=\"600\" height=\"635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Mary-Anning-facts-6.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Mary-Anning-facts-6-283x300.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mary continued to scour the beach and crumbling cliffs of Lyme Regis with her dog <strong>Trey<\/strong>, and in <strong>1823<\/strong> she made another important discovery \u2013 the first ever <strong>Plesiosaur skeleton<\/strong>! Although she was well-known for her discoveries, Mary wasn&#8217;t taken seriously as a scientist in her lifetime because of her <strong>gender<\/strong> and <strong>poor background<\/strong>. Some of the male scientists she worked with claimed her findings as their own!
