Its thick, sharp teeth could rip almost <strong>100kg<\/strong> of flesh off its victims in a single bone-crunching chomp!<\/p>\n<p>It was also one of the smartest of the meat-eating dinosaurs, with a brain twice as big as those of other giant carnivores. More than 20 almost-complete skeletons have been found, and the most perfect, nicknamed Sue, was unearthed in South Dakota, USA, 20 years ago. Experts together spent more than <strong>25,000<\/strong> hours restoring Sue\u2019s bones for exhibition. Awesome!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-velociraptor.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5141 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-velociraptor.jpg\" alt=\"deadly dinos velociraptor\" width=\"530\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-velociraptor.jpg 530w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-velociraptor-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Name<\/b>: Velociraptor<br \/>\n<b>Lived<\/b>: 80 million years ago<br \/>\n<b>Size<\/b>: Up to 2m long<br \/>\n<b>Discovered<\/b>: Mongolia<br \/>\n<b>Say it<\/b>: <em>Veh-loss-ih-rap-tore<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>1924<\/strong>, the first <strong>velociraptor<\/strong> remains were discovered in Mongolia&#8217;s <strong>Gobi Desert<\/strong> by the American <strong>Roy Chapman Andrews<\/strong> \u2013 the man believed to be the inspiration for the Indiana Jones character!<\/p>\n<p>Although small, velociraptors were quite clever and could move very fast (the name means \u2018speed thief\u2019), using their long tails for balance as they ran after their tasty prey. These carnivorous creatures hunted in packs, and probably ate mostly small lizards and mammals. They may have even eaten other velociraptors\u2019 babies. Some think the fossils found are from a previously unknown animal. Others believe that it died young, and that if it had lived longer, its sharp horns would have grown into deer-like antlers until it became a stygimoloch, an already-known dinosaur. It\u2019s full name is actually <em><strong>Dracorex hogwartsia<\/strong><\/em>, so it&#8217;s the only dino to be named after Harry Potter&#8217;s school!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-argentinosaurus.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5134 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-argentinosaurus.jpg\" alt=\"Meet Some Deadly Dinos!\" width=\"546\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-argentinosaurus.jpg 546w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-argentinosaurus-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name<\/strong>: Argentinosaurus<br \/>\n<strong>Lived<\/strong>: 90 million years ago<br \/>\n<strong>Size<\/strong>: Up to 42m long<br \/>\n<strong>Discovered<\/strong>: Argentina<br \/>\n<strong>Say it<\/strong>: <em>Ahr-gen-teen-oh-sore-us<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some dinosaurs were taller. Some were just as long. But overall, the<strong> argentinosaurus<\/strong> was the biggest, and by far the heaviest, weighing up to <strong>100 tonnes<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s as much as 20 elephants! Still, it didn\u2019t look so big in the &#8216;monkey puzzle&#8217; forests where it lived \u2013 these giant trees can grow to 25m tall! But even the planet&#8217;s most colossal creature wasn&#8217;t safe from predators. Although being 10 times lighter, mapusauruses, the largest known meat-eating dinosaurs, would hunt argentinosaurus in packs!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-nothronychus.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5138 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-nothronychus.jpg\" alt=\"deadly dinos nothronychus\" width=\"548\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-nothronychus.jpg 548w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-nothronychus-265x300.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name<\/strong>: Nothronychus<br \/>\n<strong>Lived<\/strong>: 92 million years ago<br \/>\n<strong>Size<\/strong>: Up to\u00a06m long<br \/>\n<strong>Discovered<\/strong>: New Mexico, USA<br \/>\n<strong>Say it<\/strong>: <em>Noth-throw-nye-cuss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Discovered just 10 years ago, the <strong>nothronychus&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0distinctive features show scientists that it is related to the therizinosaurus, which lived far, far away in what is now <strong>Central Asia<\/strong>! With bird-like hips, a big &#8216;pot belly&#8217; and four, forward-turning toes on each foot, it walked \u2013 slowly! \u2013 on its hind legs, leaving its huge but nimble clawed arms free to tear down branches and plants to eat. It seems this creature has a lot to teach us. Before it was found, experts believed that the area where it lived had been under the sea!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-pentaceratops.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5139 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-pentaceratops.jpg\" alt=\"deadly dinos pentaceratops\" width=\"529\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-pentaceratops.jpg 529w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-pentaceratops-289x300.jpg 289w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name<\/strong>: Pentaceratops<br \/>\n<strong>Lived<\/strong>: 75 million years ago<br \/>\n<strong>Size<\/strong>: Up to 8m long<br \/>\n<strong>Discovered<\/strong>: New Mexico, USA<br \/>\n<strong>Say it<\/strong>: <em>Pen-ta-ser-ah-tops<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This hefty, horned herbivore still holds the record for the largest skull of any land animal ever! Measuring <strong>3m long<\/strong>, its spectacular skull featured five horns, as well as a huge frill at the back of its head which may have evolved to protect its neck. Experts believe that the horns were too thin to be much use for fighting off big predators and that perhaps they were more for showing off! <strong>Pentaceratops<\/strong> also had a parrot-like beak for chomping through tough plants. Who\u2019s a pretty boy, then?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-gastonia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5137 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-gastonia.jpg\" alt=\"deadly dinos gastonia\" width=\"550\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-gastonia.jpg 550w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2014\/05\/deadly-dinos-gastonia-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Name<\/b>: Gastonia<br \/>\n<b>Lived<\/b>: 125 million years ago<br \/>\n<b>Size<\/b>: Up to 5m long<br \/>\n<b>Discovered<\/b>: Utah, USA<br \/>\n<b>Say it<\/b>: <em>Gas-tone-ee-ah<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to being well-defended, this mighty plant-eater is pretty hard to beat. Weighing in at about a tonne \u2013 as heavy as a large car \u2013 its body was covered in tough bony plates. Huge spikes up to <strong>30cm<\/strong> long grew from the <strong>gastonia<\/strong>\u2019s shoulders, back and along its sides, while thick layers of bone protected its brain and a smooth plate across its hips guarded its spine. On its powerful tail, double rows of jagged barbs lined each side so the animal could lash out at attackers.
