Costa Rica is wild! Made up of lush rainforests, mighty volcanoes and long stretches of sandy beach, it\u2019s crammed with tropical animals, including 10% of the world\u2019s butterflies! <\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/strong>Eco-success story <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

 But things weren\u2019t always so wonderful \u2013 30 years ago<\/strong>, Costa Rica was in trouble. Its rainforests were being destroyed<\/strong>, and rare wildlife was in danger of disappearing <\/strong>forever. So the government made some big changes! They: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Spent money on education<\/strong> instead of the military, teaching people how to look after and appreciate nature<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Replanted<\/strong> rainforests, paid landowners not to chop down trees, and protected<\/strong> 26% of the land by turning it into national parks<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Promoted eco-tourism<\/strong> so that visitors could enjoy all the nature, without <\/em>harming it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It worked<\/strong>! Costa Rica\u2019s rainforests have doubled<\/strong>, and now cover over 50% <\/strong>of the land. Plus, the country gets 99% <\/strong>of its energy from renewable sources<\/strong>. With one of Central America\u2019s strongest economies, Costa Rica has proved that the rainforest is worth more alive than dead<\/strong>. Hooray! <\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/strong>The future <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But the Costa Rica government want to do even more. They plan to completely eliminate single-use plastics by 2021 <\/strong>and achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050<\/strong>. Yay! <\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Active volcanoes <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

 Costa Rica has 200 volcanoes <\/strong>\u2013 six <\/strong>of which are classified as active<\/strong>! Arenal, Costa Rica\u2019s most active volcano, laid dormant for hundreds of years until erupting all-of-a-sudden in 1968. It remained active all the way until 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n

Amazing orchids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

 There are over 1,400 species of orchid <\/strong>in Costa Rica! You can see 500 <\/strong>of them in the Orchid Display <\/strong>in the Rainforest Biome <\/strong>at the Eden Project<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The national flower of Costa Rica is the guaria morada. It translates as purple country girl.<\/p>\n\n\n

Wild things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

 Costa Rica is home to lots of stunning species, from endangered giant anteaters <\/strong>to tapirs<\/strong>, harpy eagles<\/strong>, sloths <\/strong>and big cats<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It may be about five times smaller than the UK, but Costa Rica contains about 6.5%<\/strong> of the world\u2019s biodiversity<\/strong>! For example, six types of toucan<\/strong> live in Costa Rica – like the keel-billed toucan<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n
