Made up of lush rainforests, mighty volcanoes and long stretches of sandy beach, it\u2019s crammed with tropical animals, including 10% of the world\u2019s butterflies!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Eco-success story&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;But things weren\u2019t always so wonderful \u2013 <strong>30 years ago<\/strong>, Costa Rica was in trouble. Its rainforests were being <strong>destroyed<\/strong>, and rare wildlife was in danger of <strong>disappearing <\/strong>forever. So the government made some big changes! <strong>They:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8211; Spent money on <strong>education<\/strong> instead of the military, teaching people how to <strong>look after and appreciate nature<\/strong>!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8211; <strong>Replanted<\/strong> rainforests, paid landowners not to chop down trees, and <strong>protected<\/strong> 26% of the land by turning it into <strong>national parks<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8211; Promoted <strong>eco-tourism<\/strong> so that visitors could enjoy all the nature, <em>without <\/em>harming it!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;It <strong>worked<\/strong>! Costa Rica\u2019s rainforests have <strong>doubled<\/strong>, and now cover over <strong>50% <\/strong>of the land. Plus, the country gets <strong>99% <\/strong>of its energy from <strong>renewable sources<\/strong>. With one of Central America\u2019s strongest economies, Costa Rica has proved that the rainforest is <strong>worth more alive than dead<\/strong>. Hooray!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>The future&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">But the Costa Rica government want to do even more. They plan to completely <strong>eliminate single-use plastics by 2021 <\/strong>and achieve <strong>zero carbon emissions by 2050<\/strong>. Yay!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Active volcanoes <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;Costa Rica has <strong>200 volcanoes <\/strong>\u2013 <strong>six <\/strong>of which are classified as <strong>active<\/strong>! Arenal,  Costa Rica\u2019s most active volcano, laid dormant for hundreds of years until erupting all-of-a-sudden in 1968. You can see <strong>500 <\/strong>of them in the <strong>Orchid Display <\/strong>in the <strong>Rainforest Biome <\/strong>at the <strong>Eden Project<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;The national flower of Costa Rica is the guaria morada.
