You might guess that the UK’s national weather service<\/strong>, the Met Office<\/a>, spends a lot of time studying, well, weather<\/strong>! But did you know they do lots of work on climate change<\/a> too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is extreme weather? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Can you think of a time where it was hotter or rainier than ever before? That might have been a day of extreme weather<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extreme conditions happen when weather is unusually severe<\/strong>. That means intense hot weather<\/strong>; super-heavy rainfall <\/strong>that causes flooding<\/a><\/strong>, and huge wind <\/strong>or snowstorms<\/strong>, as well as things like hurricanes<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>and tornadoes<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

These events can have serious impacts <\/strong>on local communities. Houses<\/strong> and buildings<\/strong> may be damaged, crops<\/strong> can be destroyed <\/strong>and, in extreme cases, people can lose their lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists have noticed more and more extreme weather <\/strong>events happening in the last few decades. As climate change <\/strong>warms our planet, it’s affecting the global climate system<\/strong> \u2013 making weather weirder, wilder <\/strong>and more unpredictable<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter the Met Office!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, organisations all over the world are studying extreme weather and figuring out how to keep us safe<\/strong>. Here in the UK, a lot of that work includes the Met Office<\/strong>! As well as telling us what the weather<\/strong> will be in the next few days, their complex climate models <\/strong>can predict what conditions might be like decades into the future<\/strong>…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what are the Met Office up to? Well, they issue weather warnings <\/strong>for upcoming extreme weather like heavy rainfall, heatwaves and ice, giving people a chance to prepare<\/strong>. They also try to predict how severe <\/strong>these events might be.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then, when the extreme weather happens, they collect loads of information <\/strong>about the temperature<\/strong>, rainfall<\/strong> and windspeed<\/strong>. This is all passed on to other scientists <\/strong>and engineers<\/strong>, who use it to decide how to build structures <\/strong>like buildings<\/strong>, bridges<\/strong> and roads<\/strong>, that can withstand extreme conditions<\/strong> in the future. Cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can YOU do to help?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the scientists work on worldwide solutions, we can all help protect the planet by living in a more eco<\/strong>–friendly way. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are four<\/strong> simple, everyday actions <\/strong>from the Met Office, all designed to help reduce emissions <\/strong>and protect our planet<\/strong>! Try one new action every week \u2013 and encourage your family to join in too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Find new ways to travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you get from place to place? If the answer is always, “in the car”, then it’s time to think about a change! For short journeys, try walking<\/strong> or cycling<\/strong>. It might take a bit longer, but you’ll spend more time in nature \u2013 and help the planet, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it’s too far to travel under your own steam, ask your parents if you can try using public transport<\/strong> like buses<\/strong> and trains<\/strong>, rather than going in the car. Or see if you can team up with a friend<\/strong> and travel together<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Become a food hero<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You probably know that eating a healthy, balanced diet <\/strong>is important for your health. But what you choose to snack on can impact the planet’s <\/em>health, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some foods travel all over the world to end up on your plate \u2013 which results in a lot of climate-change-causing emissions<\/strong>. So, when you can, choose locally-grown <\/strong>snacks that come from somewhere near you. Eating seasonal fruit and veg<\/strong>, like strawberries in summer and carrots in winter, can help too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Reduce, reuse, recycle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever thought about where your things come from<\/strong>? Whether it’s a new lunchbox, funky-coloured football or cool trainers, everything has to be made<\/strong>, transported<\/strong> and packed<\/strong> \u2013 and that uses lots of energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While getting new stuff is exciting, you can protect the planet by only getting things you really need<\/strong>, and making them last as long as possible<\/strong>. If something breaks, think about how you can fix it<\/strong>. Can you ask someone to show you how to mend a hole <\/strong>in your top or repair a broken toy<\/strong>, rather than getting a new one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If repairing isn’t an option, see if you can reuse <\/strong>the item, or upcycle it <\/strong>into something new! And if it truly can’t be used again, donate <\/strong>or recycle <\/strong>it rather than chucking it in the bin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Spread the word!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Small actions add up when it comes to protecting the planet – so tell people what you’re doing<\/strong>, and encourage them to join in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask your family to look for community activities <\/strong>in the local area that you can help with, like litter picking <\/strong>or tree planting<\/strong>. Ask your teacher if your school<\/strong> could get involved, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
