But did you know they do lots of work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/general-geography\/what-is-climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a> too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Find out how Earth&#8217;s <strong>weather systems <\/strong>are changing, and <a href=\"#what_you_can_do\">what YOU can do<\/a> to help <strong>protect our planet<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is extreme weather? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you think of a time where it was hotter or rainier than ever before? That might have been a day of <strong>extreme weather<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme conditions happen when weather is <strong>unusually severe<\/strong>. That means intense <strong>hot weather<\/strong>; super-heavy <strong>rainfall <\/strong>that causes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/causes-of-floods\/\">flooding<\/a><\/strong>, and huge <strong>wind <\/strong>or <strong>snowstorms<\/strong>, as well as things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/hurricanes\/\"><strong>hurricanes<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/tornado-facts\/\">tornadoes<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MetOffice-Flooding.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MetOffice-Flooding.jpg\" alt=\"protect the planet | a sign saying 'FLOOD' is displayed on a flooded road\" class=\"wp-image-309247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MetOffice-Flooding.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MetOffice-Flooding-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>These events can have <strong>serious impacts <\/strong>on local communities. <strong>Houses<\/strong> and <strong>buildings<\/strong> may be damaged, <strong>crops<\/strong> can be destroyed<strong> <\/strong>and, in extreme cases, people can <strong>lose their lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists have noticed <strong>more and more extreme weather <\/strong>events happening in the last few decades. As <strong>climate change <\/strong>warms our planet, it&#8217;s affecting the <strong>global climate system<\/strong> \u2013&nbsp;making weather <strong>weirder, wilder <\/strong>and <strong>more unpredictable<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enter the Met Office!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, organisations all over the world are studying extreme weather and figuring out <strong>how to keep us safe<\/strong>. Here in the UK, a lot of that work includes <strong>the Met Office<\/strong>! As well as telling us what the <strong>weather<\/strong> will be in the next few days, their <strong>complex climate models <\/strong>can predict what conditions might be like <strong>decades into the future<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what are the Met Office up to? Well, they issue <strong>weather warnings <\/strong>for upcoming extreme weather like heavy rainfall, heatwaves and ice, giving people a chance to <strong>prepare<\/strong>. This is all passed on to other <strong>scientists <\/strong>and <strong>engineers<\/strong>, who use it to decide how to <strong>build structures <\/strong>like <strong>buildings<\/strong>, <strong>bridges<\/strong> and <strong>roads<\/strong>, that can <strong>withstand extreme conditions<\/strong> in the future. Cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what_you_can_do\">What can YOU do to help?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the scientists work on worldwide solutions, we can all help protect the planet by living in a more <strong>eco<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>friendly way. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are <strong>four<\/strong> <strong>simple, everyday actions <\/strong>from the Met Office, all designed to help <strong>reduce emissions <\/strong>and <strong>protect our planet<\/strong>! Try one new action every week \u2013&nbsp;and encourage your family to join in too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Find new ways to travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you get from place to place? If the answer is always, &#8220;in the car&#8221;, then it&#8217;s time to think about a change! For short journeys, try <strong>walking<\/strong> or <strong>cycling<\/strong>. Or see if you can <strong>team up with a friend<\/strong> and <strong>travel together<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Become a food hero<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably know that eating a <strong>healthy, balanced diet <\/strong>is important for your health. So, when you can, choose <strong>locally-grown <\/strong>snacks that come from somewhere near you. Eating <strong>seasonal fruit and veg<\/strong>, like strawberries in summer and carrots in winter, can help too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Reduce, reuse, recycle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever thought about <strong>where your things come from<\/strong>? Whether it&#8217;s a new lunchbox, funky-coloured football or cool trainers, everything has to be <strong>made<\/strong>, <strong>transported<\/strong> and <strong>packed<\/strong> \u2013&nbsp;and that uses lots of <strong>energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While getting new stuff is exciting, you can protect the planet by only getting <strong>things you really need<\/strong>, and making them <strong>last as long as possible<\/strong>. If something breaks, <strong>think about how you can fix it<\/strong>. And if it truly can&#8217;t be used again, <strong>donate <\/strong>or <strong>recycle <\/strong>it rather than chucking it in the bin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Spread the word!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Small actions add up when it comes to protecting the planet &#8211; so <strong>tell people what you&#8217;re doing<\/strong>, and encourage them to join in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask your family to look for <strong>community activities <\/strong>in the local area that you can help with, like <strong>litter picking <\/strong>or <strong>tree planting<\/strong>.
