We chat with Ember Spark author Abi Elphinstone about her writing journey and how she picked the winners of our magical creature-design competition.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But first\u2026 what’s Ember Spark about?<\/h1>\n\n\n

Rusty Fizzbang, vet <\/strong>to magical beasts<\/strong>, needs an apprentice. <\/strong>His newest recruit is ten-year-old Ember Spark, <\/strong>from the sleepy village of Yawn <\/strong>in Scotland. <\/strong>Together with an unlikely friend called Arno<\/strong>, Ember is sent to help a baby dragon <\/strong>whose parents have gone missing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But keeping magical beasts a secret<\/strong> isn\u2019t an easy task, especially with arch-villain Jasper Hornswoggle <\/strong>hot on their heels\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abi Elphinstone Q&A<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

How do you start writing a new story? Do you have a special routine or place where you like to write?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I start every story I write by drawing a map of the world<\/strong> I want to write about. For Ember Spark And The Thunder Of Dragons<\/strong><\/em>, I sketched the east coast of Scotland<\/strong>, marking up various points of interest: a seaside village<\/strong>, a harbour<\/strong>, an unexplored beach<\/strong>, a secret cave<\/strong>, a loch further inland<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once I had the landscape <\/strong>drawn, I then added a wiggly line<\/strong> through it to mark my protagonist\u2019s journey <\/strong>because it\u2019s only when my main character starts moving from place to place<\/strong> that a plot unfolds<\/strong> in my mind. Then I just throw lots of exciting obstacles <\/strong>in my protagonist\u2019s way (as the writer Vladimir Nabokov <\/strong>once said: \u2018the writer\u2019s job is to get the main character up a tree, and then once they are up there, throw rocks at them<\/strong>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I invent perilous situations: an ambush on the beach<\/strong>, a kidnap by the loch<\/strong>, a chase over the moors<\/strong>. I include riddles to puzzle over<\/strong>, anagrams to solve<\/strong> and curses to beat<\/strong>. And all of this I set against a ticking clock<\/strong> to keep the tension high<\/strong> and the reader hooked<\/strong>. My favourite place to write is inside my writing shed<\/strong> in the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n

What gave you the idea to write about a magical vet like Rusty Fizzbang and his apprentice Ember Spark?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My 2-year-old daughter<\/strong>\u2026 I thought I\u2019d seen my fair share of wildness over the years \u2013 I\u2019ve ridden with the Kazakh Eagle Hunters<\/strong> in Mongolia and I\u2019ve been a whisker away from orcas in the Arctic \u2013 but then, in 2022, I gave birth to my daughter. I did not know wildness<\/strong> until I met my daughter. She has flame-red, untameable hair<\/strong> (there was a brush once but she hurled it off a cliff). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She naps in the dog basket <\/strong>instead of her cot because the puppy is the only member of the family who doesn\u2019t tell her what to do<\/strong>. She hates baths<\/strong> but loves swimming in the ice-cold North Sea<\/strong>. She eats sand<\/strong>. There was only one thing to be done with her, I thought: write her into a story<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, along came Ember Spark: a feisty, flame-haired, animal-loving girl<\/strong> who discovers a cave full of fantastical creatures <\/strong>on the east coast of Scotland and becomes an Apprentice Vet to Magical Beasts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s your favourite part of writing a book?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Naming characters<\/strong>. In my book, Rumblestar<\/strong><\/em>, I named a heroine after a brand of butter<\/strong>. In The Dreamsnatcher<\/strong><\/em>, I pinched a character\u2019s surname from a shower gel<\/strong>. And in Sky Song,<\/strong><\/em> I pilfered the name for a kingdom from a street signpost in London<\/strong>. I find character and place names everywhere and for Ember Spark & The Thunder of Dragons<\/strong><\/em> it was no different. I named a pet dog, Babaganoush<\/strong>, after passing the dip section in a supermarket<\/strong>. I named an elderly teacher, Mrs Rickety-Knees<\/strong>, after listening to an old lady in the doctor\u2019s surgery complain about her dodgy knees<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n

I named the villain of the book, Jasper Hornswoggle<\/strong>, after playing with random letters<\/strong> on a Scrabble board<\/strong>. And I named the Vet to Magical Beasts, Rusty Fizzbang<\/strong>, after trying ice-cream from a company called Fizzbang<\/strong>. Put like that, it might sound like finding character and place names is entirely random. But there\u2019s more to it than that. In fact, I think inventing names is a bit like baking a cake<\/strong>. You mix several ingredients together then you wait a while until you\u2019re sure the finished product is ready. My list of ingredients include humour, onomatopoeia<\/strong> and connotations<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, I\u2019m on the hunt for words that will make the reader smile<\/strong>, that have a dramatic effect when said aloud<\/strong> and that create a certain picture in the reader\u2019s mind<\/strong>. Then, once I\u2019ve struck upon what I think might be a perfect name, I turn it over in my head for several days to ensure it feels right<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What tips would you give to kids looking to write their own stories or create their own characters?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Carry a notepad with you everywhere<\/strong> (as an author you are like a detective so watch the world fiercely<\/strong> for the things other people miss because often the very best stories<\/strong> are simply the ideas that nobody else has stumbled across yet<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Get outside<\/strong>: the natural world is full to the brim with wonder and stories<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Do not be afraid to fail <\/strong>(I had 96 rejection letters from literary agents before I got my first book deal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creative Competition \u2013 Results!<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A few months ago, we challenged readers <\/strong>to dream up a magical creature<\/strong> for Ember and Rusty to help! Each entry had to include a drawing<\/strong>, the creature\u2019s name<\/strong>, its magical abilities<\/strong> and what it needed help with<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After receiving so many amazing designs,<\/strong> author Abi Elphinstone<\/strong> herself selected the five most creative, unique and fun entries<\/strong>. Now, it’s time to meet the winners!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I loved looking through the competition entries!” said Abi. “There were so many original ideas <\/strong>and brilliant illustrations<\/strong>. I picked the merorpian<\/em><\/strong> as the winner because I thought its Latin name \u2018Praedo: destroyer\u2019 was very clever and the idea of it munching on sailors\u2019 brains made me chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the runners up, the piggon<\/em><\/strong> (a cross between a dragon and a pig) was very funny (and superbly illustrated). The leaf and fire dragons were beautifully drawn and so adorable I wanted them as pets. Well done everyone!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
