The Natural History Museum\u2019s Wildlife Photographer of the Year <\/em>competition <\/strong>is one of the world\u2019s top wildlife photography honours \u2013 it\u2019s kind of like the Oscars™ of the photography world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you love the great outdoors <\/strong>and have a keen eye for spotting the most captivating moments in nature<\/strong>, then this is the competition for you! Your images can cover any aspect of the natural world <\/strong>\u2013 from creepy crawlies <\/strong>and terrific trees<\/strong> to interesting habitats <\/strong>and urban wildlife<\/strong>.

And if you’re looking for some inspiration, make sure to visit this year’s <\/strong>Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition for FREE at The Natural History Museum at Tring. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten-year-old\u00a0<\/strong>wildlife photographer\u00a0Jamie Smart\u00a0<\/strong>is nicknamed the ‘eagle-eyed girl<\/strong>‘!

She\u00a0won\u00a0<\/strong>the ‘Ten Years and Under<\/strong>‘ category of the\u00a02025\u00a0Wildlife Photographer<\/em><\/strong> of the Year\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>competition with her amazing image\u00a0The Weaver’s Lair\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(below).

Hi Jamie! When did your interest in wildlife photography begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was little, I loved\u00a0dinosaurs\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 and that grew into a love of wildlife and nature. I enjoy spending time immersed in nature and I’m happiest when I’m\u00a0surrounded by wildlife\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0discovering new creatures\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0behaviours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have a favourite animal to photograph? And is there one on your ‘bucket list’ that you’d love to get a picture of?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m particularly fond of photographing tiny beetles called\u00a0weevils\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 they are so\u00a0funny\u00a0<\/strong>and full of character when you see them up close! But my bucket list is VERY long! I would love to explore more of the world’s\u00a0rainforests<\/strong>, especially in countries like\u00a0Panama\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0Central America<\/strong> and\u00a0Peru\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0South America<\/strong>.

What do you think makes a great wildlife shot?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most powerful shots for me are ones that create an\u00a0emotional response\u00a0<\/strong>and a ‘connection<\/strong>‘ between the animal and the onlooker. This can be in the form of\u00a0eye contact\u00a0<\/strong>or some kind of\u00a0intriguing animal behaviour<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the most important things a great wildlife photographer should do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think you need to be patient<\/strong>, learn as much as you
can about the creature <\/strong>you want to photograph, and understand light <\/strong>and how it works. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s your top tip for kids hoping to enter next year\u2019s competition? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find something you’re passionate about <\/strong>and photograph it \u2013 your passion <\/strong>will naturally come through in your picture, and that will help show the subject in the best possible light. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
