Bayeux Tapestry facts<\/h2>\n\n\n

1. The tapestry is like an 11th-century comic strip…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Bayeux Tapestry shows 58 scenes <\/strong>in chronological order<\/strong>. These tell the story of the Norman Conquest<\/strong>, when William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England<\/strong>. The story begins in 1064 <\/strong>or 1065<\/strong>, and the tapestry shows the most important moments of the invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surviving tapestry ends after the Battle of Hastings<\/strong> in 1066<\/strong>. This is when William defeated England’s last Anglo-Saxon king<\/strong>, Harold Godwinson<\/strong>. Click here to learn about the Anglo-Saxons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Battle of Hastings wasn’t<\/em> the end of the story. The Normans continued to conquer England, and William was crowned King <\/strong>on Christmas Day<\/a>, 1066. This was a critical moment in England’s history. After the Norman invasion, the country was never conquered again<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It’s very important to historians today<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Bayeux Tapestry shows researchers what people wore<\/strong>, what weapons <\/strong>they used, and what their ships and buildings looked like<\/strong> at this time. Most records from the Middle Ages were only written<\/strong> down<\/strong> \u2013 but this artwork shows a clearer picture <\/strong>of life back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The tapestry is almost 70 metres long<\/h3>\n\n\n

At 68.3m long<\/strong>, it’s bigger than the wingspan of most aeroplanes, and about two thirds as long as a football pitch! But it’s only about 50cm tall<\/strong> \u2013 a little smaller than the height of two Nat Geo Kids <\/em>magazines stacked on top of each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. It’s not technically <\/em>a tapestry…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s actually a long strip of linen <\/strong>decorated with colourful embroidery <\/strong>stitched onto the fabric using a needle. That’s different from a tapestry, which is artwork that’s woven<\/strong> into fabric. Over 45kg <\/strong>of dyed wool <\/strong>was used to make it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. It’s packed with people and animals!<\/h3>\n\n\n

Look closely and you’ll spot hundreds of people<\/strong>, animals<\/strong> and even mythical creatures<\/strong>! There are 627 people<\/strong>, 190 horses<\/strong> and 35 dogs<\/strong>, plus more than 500 other animals<\/strong>, including peacocks<\/strong>, camels<\/strong>, pigs<\/strong>, frogs <\/strong>and dragons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Historians aren’t quite sure who <\/em>made the tapestry or where it was created…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But their best guess is that it was made in England<\/strong> (probably in the city of Canterbury<\/strong>) by skilled<\/strong> English embroiderers<\/strong> in the 1070s<\/strong>. First, someone drew the designs <\/strong>onto the linen. Then embroiderers stitched <\/strong>over the outlines by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. The end of the story is missing!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many historians think the tapestry originally continued for several more metres. It may have ended with William’s coronation <\/strong>as King of England \u2013\u00a0but the last pieces have never been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. It features a real-life comet that people believed was a prophecy…<\/h3>\n\n\n

The Bayeux Tapestry shows Halley’s Comet<\/strong>, which has been seen from Earth<\/a> for at least 2,000 years<\/strong>. The comet<\/a> is visible once every 76 years<\/strong> \u2013 including in 1066<\/strong> and, most recently, in 1986<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comet appears soon after Harold<\/strong> is crowned King of England in January 1066<\/strong>. People in the Middle Ages thought it was a warning <\/strong>that something important \u2013 or terrible <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0was about to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. The tapestry still harbours many mysteries, even today…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One example is a famous scene showing a woman called \u00c6lfgyva<\/strong> (say “ELF-gee-vah<\/em>“) standing beside a priest. Her name<\/strong> is embroidered on the tapestry \u2013\u00a0but nobody knows exactly what is happening. Historians are still trying to solve the mystery today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. In 2026, the Bayeux Tapestry returned to England for the first time in over 900 years<\/h3>\n\n\n

This ‘Thank you!’ message was projected on the cliffs of Dover as the tapestry arrived in England<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Soon after it was made, the Bayeux Tapestry travelled to Normandy<\/strong>, which is now part of France<\/a><\/strong>. But if historians are right, and the tapestry was originally made in England, then its trip to the UK in July 2026 marked a historic return to home soil!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It travelled overnight <\/strong>with a police escort<\/strong> and will soon go on display at the British Museum <\/strong>in London \u2013 giving people an amazing chance to see this epic piece of history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
