A group of rats is called a &#8216;mischief&#8217;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Rats are mainly <strong>nocturnal<\/strong> and live <strong>underground<\/strong>. Although they vastly outnumber humans, we rarely see them. They are experts at staying out of sight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Throughout human history, rats have <strong>travelled with us around the planet<\/strong>, stowing away on boats and settling wherever humans live. They feed on the <strong>food we throw away<\/strong> and can <strong>spread diseases among humans<\/strong>, like the medieval <strong>Black Death<\/strong>, which was spread by fleas that lived on rats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> Rats&#8217; <strong>super-strong teeth<\/strong> never stop growing! They have to keep nibbling <strong>to wear them down<\/strong> \u2013 or eating would become impossible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> Their whiskers&nbsp;are more <strong>sensitive<\/strong> than human <strong>fingertips<\/strong>! Rats <strong>brush<\/strong> the <strong>long hairs<\/strong> against objects or the floor, helping them build up a <strong>detailed picture<\/strong> of their environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Rat-facts-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rat facts: image of cute rat\" class=\"wp-image-36160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Rat-facts-1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Rat-facts-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6)<\/strong> With eyes on either side of their head that can move in <strong>opposite directions<\/strong>, rats are even able to see what\u2019s happening <strong><em>above <\/em>them<\/strong>. Very handy for spotting any <strong>rat-eating birds<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7)<\/strong> Rats can <strong>hear<\/strong> well, including sounds that are too <strong>high-pitched<\/strong> for humans to hear. They may also \u2018<strong>smile<\/strong>\u2019 with their ears! When they\u2019re <strong>happy<\/strong> their ears <strong>relax<\/strong>, become <strong>droopy<\/strong> and <strong>slightly pinker<\/strong>. <em>Aww<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8)<\/strong> They wash by constantly <strong>licking<\/strong> their fur \u2013 sometimes they\u2019ll even \u2018<strong>comb<\/strong>\u2019 it into place with their teeth. Yes, rats are <em>squeak<\/em>-y <strong>clean<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9)<\/strong> Rats&#8217; long tails are used for <strong>balance<\/strong> and to keep themselves <strong>cool<\/strong> \u2013&nbsp;they can direct some of their <strong>body heat<\/strong> out through them!
