Your hero Jack is the youngest member of the Courtney family who you\u2019ve been writing about for a long<\/strong><strong> time. Can you tell us about that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The fictional <strong>Courtney family<\/strong> appeared in my first novel, <strong><em>When the Lion Feeds<\/em><\/strong>, first published in <strong>1964<\/strong>. Since then the Courtneys have become the <strong>longest-<\/strong><strong>running family<\/strong> saga in publishing history, spanning over <strong>20 books<\/strong> and more than <strong>50 years<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wow! You\u2019re best known as an author of adult books and have sold 130 million copies worldwide. Why did you decide to write for children?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>I was <strong>inspired<\/strong> by what <strong>young people<\/strong> are doing to <strong>question what is happening<\/strong> with the <strong>environment<\/strong>. It felt like a good idea to try to <strong>speak directly to them<\/strong> through my characters and my writing.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do you think adventures are important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Having an <strong>adventure<\/strong> is the only way you are certain <br \/>to <strong>learn something about yourself<\/strong> and <strong>your world<\/strong> at the same time. What was it like writing a book with the famous Wilbur Smith?!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">I\u2019ve only ever written books <strong>on my own<\/strong> before \u2013 it\u2019s a lonely process. So working with Wilbur is <strong>great, collaborative fun<\/strong>. We <strong>brainstorm ideas<\/strong> and bat drafts back and forth. Wilbur is the master at <strong>ratcheting up tension<\/strong>. He sharpens the story and I make it sing!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>What kind of research did you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>Lots!<\/strong> I read up on <strong>\u2018resource wars\u2019<\/strong> in the <strong>Democratic Republic of the Congo <\/strong>(where the book is set), and learned how <strong>tantalum<\/strong> \u2013 the stuff used to make our <strong>mobile phones<\/strong> \u2013 is <strong>dug by hand <\/strong>from African <strong>mines<\/strong>. <br \/>I also interviewed a <strong>BBC expert<\/strong> on <strong>mountain gorillas<\/strong>, and watched some <strong>amazing wildlife films<\/strong> (a tough job but somebody\u2019s got to do it!).<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>You also work as a travel writer. Have you been on any real-life adventures?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">I\u2019ve <strong>dived with sharks<\/strong> in <strong>Australia, narrowly avoided being kidnapped <\/strong>in <strong>Kashmir <\/strong>[a region divided between three countries \u2013 <strong>India<\/strong>, <strong>Pakistan<\/strong> and <strong>China<\/strong>] and <strong>slept in a tent surrounded by lions<\/strong> in <strong>Kenya<\/strong>, Africa. I\u2019ve also <strong>eaten fire-ants<\/strong> in <strong>Puerto Rico<\/strong> [an island in the <strong>Caribbean<\/strong>.] \u00a0They taste <strong>peppery<\/strong> and you have to chew them quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>Yikes!
