But many other animals have a fighting spirit that helps them pull through when disaster strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Check out these death-defying\u00a0<em>tails<\/em>\u00a0of super survival\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Darcy the cocker spaniel<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7339\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In July last year, two-year-old Darcy was out with her owners at Glascarnoch Dam in the Highlands of Scotland when she suddenly leapt over a 1.5-m-high wall, plunging 18m down the other side!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve walked there many times and she\u2019s never done anything like that before,\u201d says owner Wendy Lyon. \u201cWe heard her \u2018scream\u2019 and then silence. We expected the worst and ran to look over the wall. Incredibly, she\u2019d survived the fall and was looking up at us. But we could see she was badly injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cocker spaniel was rescued by the fire brigade and taken to the vet \u2013 air was leaking into her chest cavity, her liver was damaged, her pelvis was fractured, her front leg was fractured and dislocated, and her back leg had shattered in five places!<\/p>\n<p>Incredibly, after lots of complicated operations, hydrotherapy (exercises in water), physiotherapy and rest, Darcy has now almost fully recovered and is running around outside again! \u201cShe continues to amaze us at every check-up,\u201d says vet Stuart Ashworth. \u201cDarcy\u2019s been a model patient and is an incredibly brave, sweet-natured dog.\u201d Woof!<\/p>\n<p>Darcy the cocker spaniel was winner of the 2016 PDSA Pet Survivor competition! The contest recognises pets\u2019 incredible survival spirit, the love and devotion of their owners and the skill and dedication of the veterinary teams who helped \u2028save their lives.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 660px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7393-1\" width=\"660\" height=\"351\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.mp4\">http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Darcy.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Dobby the ferret<\/p>\n<h2\/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7341\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.jpg\" alt=\"PDSA Pet Survivors\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Five-year-old Dobby escaped from his owner\u2019s home in Stanley, County Durham, in March last year and ended up in a stranger\u2019s garden. Unfortunately, a large dog objected to the furry intruder, and grabbed him in his jaws, shaking him about.<\/p>\n<p>Dobby had no visible wounds but over the next couple of days he didn\u2019t seem his usual lively self. \u2028\u201cI knew something wasn\u2019t right,\u201d says his owner, Jade Gardiner. Vet Christina Stubbins revealed that a section of his intestine had burst and he\u2019d developed a severe infection in the abdomen.\u00a0He was at death\u2019s door.<\/p>\n<p>Jade knew he was a fighter, so she asked the vet to operate. And, amazingly, a few days later, Dobby was able to go home! \u201cWhen he first arrived I honestly wasn\u2019t sure if he would make it,\u201d says Christina, \u201cbut his strength of character and cheeky nature prevailed.\u201d Yay!<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 660px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7393-2\" width=\"660\" height=\"349\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.mp4\">http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Dobby.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Arthur the British shorthair cat<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7337\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Arthur had been missing for several days in June 2016 when his owners suddenly heard him in the house, meowing on the stairs. But their relief turned to horror when they saw a rusty illegal animal trap clamped to his back leg!<\/p>\n<p>Poor Arthur was in a terrible state and the vet estimated that the accident had happened on the first night he\u2019d gone missing. \u201cThe trap was so heavy I can\u2019t imagine how he\u2019d managed to get home, through the cat flap and halfway up the stairs,\u201d says Arthur\u2019s owner Gemma Harris, from Bures in Suffolk.<\/p>\n<p>Vet Kitty Craig was amazed by Arthur\u2019s incredible determination to drag himself home to safety. \u2028\u201cWe knew we had to give him a chance,\u201d she says. Sadly, the two-year-old cat had to have his leg amputated and Kitty feared he might not survive the operation.<\/p>\n<p>But Arthur pulled through and he shocked everyone with the incredible speed of his recovery \u2013 he was soon dashing about as if nothing had happened! Having three legs clearly hasn\u2019t slowed him down at all!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 660px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7393-3\" width=\"660\" height=\"351\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.mp4?_=3\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.mp4\">http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Arthur.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Hans the Dutch rabbit<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Hans.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7343\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Hans.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Hans.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PDSA-Pet-Survivors-Hans-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gwen Butler, who runs an animal rescue charity in Richmond, North Yorkshire, received a phone call in July last year saying that an abandoned rabbit had been found \u2013 it had been attacked by either a fox or a dog and was badly injured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was really underweight, his teeth were in an awful state and a wound on his head was horribly infected,\u201d Gwen explains. \u201cI took him to a vet in Leeds who\u2019s great with rabbits, but I was unsure if she\u2019d be able to save him. But I never give up on pets, however small. I knew it was a miracle that he\u2019d survived the attack, so I was willing to do whatever it took to give him a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, vet Trudi Pardoe was able to save the rabbit\u2019s infected ear and clean up his teeth. Gwen fell in love with the bouncing bunny and adopted him as her house rabbit. \u201cI named him Hans, after the fairytale author, Hans Christian Andersen,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was something of an \u2028ugly duckling when we first rescued him, but I hoped that he would eventually turn into a beautiful swan.
