Believe it or not, at the start of the 19th century, nurses usually had no training at all, and they weren\u2019t even paid for the &#8216;menial&#8217; work they did! And yup, you guessed it &#8211; that\u2019s how she got her name! Her parents were called <strong>William and Fanny Nightingale<\/strong>, and she had one older sister, too &#8211; <strong>Frances Parthenope<\/strong>, AKA \u2018Pop\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10641\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-6.jpg\" alt=\"Florence nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-6.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-6-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">William Nightingale was a wealthy banker and was able to provide his family with a very privileged life. They had servants and two lovely houses &#8211; a winter home in Hampshire and a summer home in Derbyshire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the time that Florence was a youngster, <strong>most girls didn\u2019t go to school<\/strong> &#8211; in fact, many didn\u2019t receive any education at all! But William was keen for his daughters to learn, and gave them lessons in lots of different subjects, including science, history and maths.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">What did Florence Nightingale do?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In <strong>Victorian Britain<\/strong>, wealthy women like Florence weren\u2019t expected to work &#8211; their job was to marry and look after the home. Daily life was spent seeing to servants, entertaining guests, reading, sewing and attending social events. But Florence saw something very different for her future. When she was 16 years old, she believed she heard a voice from God calling for her to&nbsp;<strong>carry out important work to help those suffering<\/strong>. She wanted to be a nurse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Florence broke the news to her parents, they weren\u2019t too happy! Nursing was not a respectful profession and, what\u2019s more, hospitals were filthy, horrible places where sick people died &#8211; certainly no place for wealthy girl like Florence! William tried hard to change his daughter\u2019s mind, but Florence was determined. In 1851, he gave in, and allowed Florence to study nursing at a Christian school for women in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/country-fact-file-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a><\/strong>. There, she learned important skills in caring for patients and the <strong>importance of hospital cleanliness<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It wasn\u2019t long before Florence put her new skills to the test. British troops went off to fight in the Crimea &#8211; an area in the south of Russia, now part of Ukraine. News soon reached home of soldiers dying from battle wounds, cold, hunger and sickness, with no real medical care or nurses to treat them. Help was needed fast, and the Minister for War &#8211; called <strong>Sidney Herbert <\/strong>&#8211;&nbsp;knew just the person&#8230; He asked Florence to lead a team of nurses to the Crimea!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10634\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-1.jpg\" alt=\"Florence Nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-1.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When they arrived, the nurses found the Army hospital in <strong>Scutari<\/strong> (the area where wounded soldiers were sent) in a terrible state. It was overcrowded and filthy, with blocked drains, broken toilets and rats running everywhere. Imagine the smell! There weren\u2019t enough medical supplies or equipment, and wounded soldiers had to sleep on the dirty floor, without blankets to keep warm, clean water to drink or fresh food to eat. Not surprisingly, disease spread quickly and most of the soldiers died from infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Florence Nightingale to the rescue!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10639\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-4.jpg\" alt=\"Florence Nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-4.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-4-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Florence knew that the soldiers could only get well again if the hospital conditions improved. With funds from back home, she bought better medical equipment and decent food, and paid for workmen to clear the drains. And together with her team, she <strong>cleaned the wards<\/strong>, set up a <strong>hospital kitchen<\/strong> and provided the wounded soldiers with <strong>quality care<\/strong> &#8211; bathing them, dressing their wounds and feeding them. As a result of all the improvements, far fewer soldiers were dying from disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Why was Florence Nightingale the Lady with the Lamp?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10645\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts.jpg\" alt=\"Florence Nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Florence Nightingale <strong>truly cared for her suffering patients<\/strong>. At night, when everyone was sleeping, she\u2019d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>visit the soldiers to make sure they were comfortable. She\u2019d also write letters home for those who could not write themselves. Since Florence carried a lantern with her on her night visits, the soldiers would call her &#8216;<strong>The Lady with the Lamp&#8217;<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">Florence after the Crimean War<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By the time Florence returned to England in 1856, she&#8217;d made quite a name for herself. After newspapers wrote about her work in the Crimea, people thought of her as a heroine. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/history\/monarchy\/ten-facts-about-queen-victoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen Victoria<\/a><\/strong> wrote her a letter to say thank you for everything she had done. Cool, eh?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But Florence had no care for fame, and even though the war was over, there was still work to be done. She set about writing letters to important people telling them what was wrong with Army hospitals, and in September 1856 she met with<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/history\/monarchy\/ten-facts-about-queen-victoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen Victoria<\/a><\/strong> to discuss ways to improve military medical systems. Huge reform took place &#8211; the Army started to train doctors, hospitals became cleaner and soldiers were provided with better clothing, food and care. Go, Flo!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1860, the <strong>Nightingale Training School for Nurses<\/strong> opened at St Thomas\u2019s Hospital in London. Not only did the school provide excellent nurse training, it made nursing a respectable career for women who wanted to work outside the home.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">How is Florence Nightingale remembered?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10640\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-5.jpg\" alt=\"Florence Nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-5.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-5-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Florence suffered from illness for much of her later life, largely because of all her hard work helping sick people. In fact, during her final 40 years she spent many days confined to her bed. But she was greatly appreciated for everything she did for nursing, and for <strong>saving the lives of thousands of people<\/strong>. In 1907, Florence became the first woman to receive the <strong>Order of Merit<\/strong>, an award given by the queen for super-special work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Sadly, Florence Nightingale died on 13 of August 1910, but she will forever be recognised as the founder of modern nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">What do you think of our Florence Nightingale facts?
