She had a sister called Louisa and a brother called Edward.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know if Mary went to school, but we do know that from a very young age she had an interest in <strong>medicine and nursing<\/strong>. When she was just 12, she was helping her mother run a boarding house in Kingston, where many of the guests were sick or injured soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother taught her a lot about <strong>traditional Jamaican treatments<\/strong> and remedies, and she also learned a lot from army doctors staying at the boarding house.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mary the nurse and intrepid traveller!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If there was one thing Mary loved, it was travel! At that time, it wasn\u2019t common for women to travel a lot\u2026but Mary sure did.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, when she was a teenager, she took two trips to England, where she spent three years in total.<\/p>\n<p>She was quite the business woman, too, and later journeyed to the islands of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/bahamas-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bahamas<\/a><\/strong>, Haiti and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/cuba-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuba<\/a><\/strong>, where she bought spices, pickles and jams to sell back in Jamaica.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-5.jpg\" alt=\"mary seacole facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-5.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-5-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1836, Mary married an English man called <strong>Edwin\u00a0Seacole\u00a0<\/strong>in her hometown of Kingston. But sadly, Edwin was a very sick man and and died just a few years later, in 1844.\u00a0Following her husband\u2019s death, Mary focussed on caring for sick people.<\/p>\n<p>In 1850, her medical skills were very much needed, when many people in Kingston fell victim to a deadly disease called <strong>cholera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mary heads to Panama<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10973\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-2.jpg\" alt=\"mary seacole facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1853, Mary went to the city of Cruces in <strong>Panama<\/strong>, where her brother ran a hotel and store.<\/p>\n<p>There, Mary opened a store selling food and goods to gold miners, and continued her work in medicine &#8211; treating people suffering from cholera and tropical diseases such a yellow fever.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mary Seacole and the Crimean War<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mary returned to Kingston in 1853, but she didn\u2019t stay long. On hearing news of British soldiers going off to Russia to fight in the bloody battles of the <strong>Crimean War<\/strong>,\u00a0she wanted to help.<\/p>\n<p>And so&#8230;off she went to the the War Office in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/history\/general-history\/ten-horrible-facts-about-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London<\/a><\/strong> to requesting to join <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/history\/general-history\/florence-nightingale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florence Nightingale<\/a><\/strong> and her team of nurses treating wounded and sick soldiers in the Crimea!<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Mary was turned down, along with several other nurses. But was that enough to stop the Mary? No way! Together with her friend <strong>Thomas Day<\/strong>, in 1855 she set off to the Crimea in a ship stocked with medical supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10636\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-2.jpg\" alt=\"Florence Nightingale facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/florence-nightingale-facts-2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She arrived to a terrible state. Many of the soldiers were cold, dirty and hungry, and those that were sick and wounded weren\u2019t being cared for.<\/p>\n<p>Mary decided something had to be done and so, with her loyal friend Thomas, she opened a \u201c<strong>British Hotel<\/strong>\u201d near to the battlefields.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, this wasn\u2019t the kind of \u2018hotel\u2019 you&#8217;d expect to stay in on your holidays, gang \u2013 it was basically a hut made of metal sheets, where soldiers could rest and buy hot food, drinks and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Mary used the money spent there to help treat and care for sick and wounded soldiers.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Mighty Mary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10978\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-6.jpg\" alt=\"mary seacole facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-6.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-6-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A lot of nurses did invaluable work looking after the soldiers in the Crimean War, but Mary went a step further, and did something incredibly brave \u2013 she rode on horseback into the battlefields, even when under fire, to nurse wounded men from both sides of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Mary so was caring, in fact, she became known amongst the soldiers as \u201c<strong>Mother Seacole<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What did Mary do after the war?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10974\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-3.jpg\" alt=\"mary seacole facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-3-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the Crimean War ended in, Mary returned to London with very little money and in poor health. But her hard work didn&#8217;t go unrecognised \u2013 many of the soldiers wrote to the newspapers about all she had done for them, and <strong>80,000 people attended a charity gala in 1857<\/strong> to raise money for her.<\/p>\n<p>She also received a number of medals for her bravery from\u00a0governments in different countries.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 20 years of her life, Mary led a quiet life, spending her time between London and Jamaica \u2013\u00a0where she went to escape cold winters. <strong>She died in 1881<\/strong> in Kensal Green, London.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why do we remember Mary Seacole?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10979\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-7.jpg\" alt=\"mary seacole facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-7.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/08\/mary-seacole-facts-7-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of what we know about Mary Seacole comes from a book she published in 1857 about her life. She called it <em><strong>The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; and it proved a popular read!<\/p>\n<p>But following her death, her name was almost completely forgotten for around 100 years. It wasn\u2019t until the 1970s, in fact, that people started to read about the amazing Mary Seacole and wanted to know more about her.<\/p>\n<p>As a mixed-race woman living in the 19th century, what Mary Seacole achieved in her lifetime was truly remarkable. <strong>She broke social rules and prejudices<\/strong> to travel the world, run businesses and help those in need \u2013 even in the most dangerous places.<\/p>\n<p>Best known for her work as a nurse in the Crimean War, Mary Seacole will forever be remembered as an <strong>incredible woman and inspiring role model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">What do you think of our Mary Seacole facts?
