This means that they are part of a group of <strong>mammals<\/strong> who have <strong>pouches <\/strong>where their <strong>newborn young develop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wombat babies are born <strong>super small and helpless<\/strong>, so the pouch is a safe place for them to <strong>grow up<\/strong> and get ready for the world! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Did you know? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/kangaroo-facts\/\"><strong>Kangaroos<\/strong><\/a>, koalas, and wombats might not look alike, but they&#8217;re all marsupials! Plus, their adorable babies are all known as <strong>joeys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) There are three different species of wombat<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the <strong>common wombat <\/strong>(also known as the <strong>bare-nosed wombat<\/strong>), the <strong>Southern hairy-nosed wombat<\/strong>, and the <strong>Northern hairy-nosed wombat<\/strong>. All three species live in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/facts-about-australia\/\">Australia<\/a>. They have a variety of <strong>habitats<\/strong>, including mountains, forests, and grasslands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Wombats aren&#8217;t small! <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An adult wombat usually grows to about <strong>a metre <\/strong>long \u2013 the same as a medium-sized dog. They can weigh up to <strong>40 kilograms<\/strong>, and have <strong>wide, strong feet <\/strong>which are great for <strong>digging<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Wombats are mostly nocturnal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These clever critters spend their nights <strong>foraging <\/strong>for food, or digging <strong>new tunnels, entrances, <\/strong>or <strong>exits <\/strong>for their <strong>ever-expanding burrows<\/strong>! They are <strong>herbivores<\/strong>, so most of their time is spent <strong>grazing <\/strong>on <strong>native grasses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wombats usually spend their days tucked away in their <strong>underground homes<\/strong>. These animals can move quickly when they need to, and can sustain this speed for <strong>up to 90 seconds<\/strong>. There are even reports of humans being <strong>knocked over <\/strong>by charging wombats!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6) Wombat poo is cube-shaped<\/strong> (yes, really!)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wombats often mark their territory using their poo, and so scientists believe the square-sided shape <strong>stops the poop from rolling away<\/strong>, ensuring the smelly signals stay put!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7) During bushfires, wombat burrows become places of shelter for many other animals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wombat burrows, known as <strong>warrens<\/strong>, can be <em>huge<\/em>! These underground homes can contain tunnels over <strong>200 metres long<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And these warrens don&#8217;t just serve as homes for wombats \u2013\u00a0they can become <strong>shelters <\/strong>for other <strong>small mammals<\/strong>, too. During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/what-is-a-bushfire\/\">bushfires<\/a>, the <strong>tunnels<\/strong> <strong>stay<\/strong> <strong>cool<\/strong>, offering protection from the flames. <strong>Rock wallabies, bettongs, skinks <\/strong>and even <strong>little<\/strong> <strong>penguins <\/strong>have been seen using wombat warrens to escape fires, or <strong>hide from predators. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A <strong>black-footed wallaby<\/strong> was once spotted using a wombat burrow even more than the wombat owner. The intruder visited nearly <strong>2,000 times <\/strong>in eight weeks!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wombat-content-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wombat-content-2.jpg\" alt=\"Facts about wombats | wombat sitting on grass\" class=\"wp-image-167092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wombat-content-2.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wombat-content-2-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8<\/strong>) <strong>In prehistoric times, herds of giant wombats roamed Australia<\/strong>!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>mega-marsupials<\/strong> formed a group of animals called <strong><em>Diprotodon<\/em><\/strong>, which lived in Australia during the <strong>Ice Age. <\/strong><em>Diprotodon<\/em> were about <strong>1.8 metres tall <\/strong>and weighed as much as <strong>2,800 kilograms <\/strong>\u2013 roughly the same as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/rhinoceros-facts\/\">rhinoceros<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9)<\/strong> <strong>Their pouches face backwards<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most marsupials have their pouches on their fronts, but wombats have theirs facing <strong>backwards<\/strong>. This <strong>protects wombat joeys<\/strong> in the pouch from being <strong>sprayed with dirt<\/strong> while their mother <strong>digs <\/strong>in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10) The Northern hairy-nosed wombat is critically endangered<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, there are only <strong>115 <\/strong>Northern hairy-nosed wombats left on Earth. Due to <strong>food shortages <\/strong>and <strong>droughts<\/strong>, this species has been driven out of their <strong>historic habitat<\/strong>. They now live in just <strong>two tiny locations <\/strong>in <strong>Queensland<\/strong>, Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, <strong>conservationists are working hard to help<\/strong>. In the 1980s, just <strong>35 <\/strong>Northern hairy-nosed wombats were left alive \u2013 so things are already improving! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">We hope you enjoyed our facts about wombats!
