These powerful limbs are the <strong>secret to their success<\/strong> \u2013 and incredibly, it takes baby frogs <strong>weeks and weeks<\/strong> to grow them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/insects\/butterfly-life-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">butterflies<\/a>, frogs and toads undergo an astonishing <strong>transformation <\/strong>&#8211; which is called &#8216;<em>metamorphosis<\/em>&#8216; &#8211; as they grow up. From <strong>jelly-like eggs<\/strong> laid in water, they grow into <strong>wriggling tadpoles<\/strong>, and finally <strong>grow<\/strong> <strong>legs<\/strong> suitable for land!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how does this <strong>mesmerising metamorphosis<\/strong> work? This happens in <strong>early spring<\/strong>, when the weather is just starting to get <strong>warmer<\/strong>. Spotting frogspawn is often thought of as being a key <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/science\/nature\/signs-of-spring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sign of spring<\/a><\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can hunt for frogspawn in <strong>shallow, still water <\/strong>\u2013 a garden pond, for example! As the eggs are defenceless, they&#8217;re usually laid <strong>among vegetation <\/strong>and<strong> just below the surface of the water<\/strong>, to give them some <strong>protection<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_5.png\" alt=\"Frog Life cycle | frogspawn nestled between reeds\" class=\"wp-image-172099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_5.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_5-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re lucky enough to spot some of these strange eggs, pay attention to their <strong>shape<\/strong>. Frogs lay &#8216;frogspawn&#8217;, which looks like a <strong>round cluster <\/strong>of eggs, while toads lay &#8216;toadspawn&#8217;, which comes in <strong>long ribbons<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>DID YOU KNOW?<br>As far as scientists are concerned, there&#8217;s <strong>no difference <\/strong>between frogs and toads! They have different <strong>characteristics<\/strong>, but share the same <strong>family tree<\/strong>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the frogspawn, the baby frogs start out as <strong>tiny black dots<\/strong> surrounded by a <strong>jelly-like substance.<\/strong> Over time, they become <strong>comma-shaped<\/strong>, as their tails begin to develop \u2013 amazing! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 2: Teeny tadpoles!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_6.png\" alt=\"Frog Life Cycle | tadpoles swim in pond\" class=\"wp-image-172100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_6.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_6-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After spending <strong>1-3 weeks <\/strong>eating the <strong>yolk <\/strong>of their egg, the baby frog hatches into the big, wide world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the baby frogs are known as <strong>tadpoles. <\/strong>They have <strong>gills<\/strong>, a <strong>mouth<\/strong>, and a <strong>long tail<\/strong>, which they need for <strong>swimming<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>DID YOU KNOW?<br>The tadpole stage of the frog life cycle is also known as the <strong>larval stage<\/strong>. Tadpoles are frog <strong>larvae<\/strong>, in the same way that caterpillars are butterfly larvae! <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first week or two after hatching, tadpoles <strong>won&#8217;t move around very much<\/strong>, as they\u2019re still absorbing some <strong>nutrition <\/strong>from the yolk of their egg. However, once the yolk is all gone, the tadpoles are <strong>big and strong enough<\/strong> to <strong>venture out <\/strong>into their watery world! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike adult frogs, tadpoles <strong>can&#8217;t go on land<\/strong> \u2013 so they feed on <strong>plant material <\/strong>filtered<strong> <\/strong>from the water, and tear off tiny chunks of nearby <strong>vegetation<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_3.png\" alt=\"Frog Life Cycle | Tadpole close up, showing tail, eyes, and mouth\" class=\"wp-image-172097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_3.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_3-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The legless, water-bound tadpoles slowly <strong>metamorphose <\/strong>into frogs over  the next <strong>14 weeks<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, they grow <strong>back legs<\/strong>, then <strong>front legs <\/strong>too! Soon after, their body starts to change <strong>shape<\/strong>, and they&#8217;re able to start eating <strong>insects<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_2.png\" alt=\"Frog Life cycle | tadpole that has grown all its legs, but still has a tail\" class=\"wp-image-172096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_2.png 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/03\/FrogLifecycle_Body_2-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the tadpoles&#8217; <strong>tails shrink away<\/strong>, and skin <strong>grows over their gills<\/strong>, as they develop <strong>lungs <\/strong>and <strong>eardrums<\/strong>! These are super important steps, as they prepare the tadpole for <strong>life on land<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Once their gills and tails are gone forever, tadpoles undergo one last <strong>24-hour push<\/strong>, where the metamorphosis completes. Once this stage is finished, the baby frogs emerge from the water as <strong>tiny adults<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Amazingly, tadpoles are able to control the timing of their transformation. If they&#8217;re living in a dangerous environment, like a pond full of hungry fish, they will metamorphose more quickly, to make their escape! On the other hand, if their pond has lots of plants to munch through, and few predators &#8211; or if it&#8217;s extra cold on land &#8211; tadpoles can delay their metamorphosis, and remain in the water for up to a year. So long as they <strong>stick to the shade <\/strong>and <strong>don&#8217;t dry out<\/strong>, they can live on land \u2013 but they often return to ponds and lakes for a splash! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before too long, the females will look for water to lay her own eggs.
