Currently, around half of the world\u2019s population<\/strong> live in cities<\/strong> \u2013 but by 2050<\/strong> they\u2019re set to become even more crowded, with an additional 2.5 billion<\/strong> people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these extra inhabitants will need places to live<\/strong>, transport<\/strong> to get around, and energy<\/strong> to power their homes. This will put extra pressure<\/strong> on Earth\u2019s resources<\/strong> \u2013 which is why we need to come up with environmentally-friendly<\/strong> ways to construct buildings<\/strong>, travel<\/strong> and generate power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a look at some of the high-tech sustainable solutions<\/strong> being developed by materials company Covestro<\/strong> for the cities of the future<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

HIGHTECH TRANSPORT<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Technology<\/strong> could make travel safer<\/strong>, more sustainable<\/strong>, and more efficient<\/strong> than ever before. Here\u2019s how\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-driving cars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the future, our cars<\/strong> will be electric<\/strong> and they\u2019ll all be able to drive themselves<\/strong> \u2013 some of them won\u2019t even have steering wheels<\/strong>! How will it work? Well, sensors<\/strong>, radars<\/strong> and cameras<\/strong> will help cars coordinate<\/strong> \u2013 they\u2019ll whizz<\/strong> and weave<\/strong> past one another like an elegant ballet<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Passengers<\/strong> can daydream<\/strong> while gazing out of the panoramic<\/strong> roof. Front seats swivel<\/strong> round so everyone can socialise<\/strong>. And interactive<\/strong>, animated<\/strong> holographic screens<\/strong> will be built right into car dashboards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ELECTRIC VEHICLES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Electric vehicles <\/strong>are already going mainstream! In 2017<\/strong>, Nagpur<\/strong> became India\u2019s<\/strong> first city to have an electric transport system. By 2030<\/strong>, the country aims to have 100% electric public transport<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PUBLIC TRANSPORT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buses<\/strong> of the future will be sleek<\/strong>, smooth<\/strong> and sustainable<\/strong>! Instead of rumbling engines they’ll run on high-performance batteries <\/strong>and will be built out of lightweight materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

INTERNET EVERYWHERE<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Do you ever have issues with buffering<\/strong> or slow downloads<\/strong>? Well, in the cities of the future, super-fast 5G internet networks<\/strong> will be everywhere, transforming the way we live\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Smart’ street furniture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everyday urban objects <\/strong>will be ‘smart<\/strong>,’ just like phones<\/strong>! Streetlights<\/strong> will have sensors so they only switch<\/strong> on when someone’s near by \u2013 saving energy<\/strong> and reducing light pollution<\/strong>. They’ll also measure<\/strong> air pollution<\/strong> and monitor traffic<\/strong>. Bins<\/strong> will notify the council<\/strong> when they need emptying<\/strong>, and parking meters<\/strong> will be automated<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 5G transmitters<\/strong> will need to be installed every 500 metres <\/strong>\u2013 they could be on lamp posts<\/strong>, waste bins<\/strong> and traffic lights<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOUSING<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Most<\/strong> of the homes<\/strong> that will make up our future cities already exist today<\/strong>. And to solve the climate emergency<\/strong> we need to make these older buildings energy efficient<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Innovative insulation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Covestro<\/strong> has come up with a material<\/strong> called cardyon\u00ae<\/strong> which is made from the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide<\/strong> (CO\u2082<\/strong>).
The innovative CO\u2082 technology could be used to make insulation<\/strong>, which would not only reduce CO\u2082 in the atmosphere, but prevent future emissions<\/strong>, too. Wow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 In the USA<\/strong>, up to 90%<\/strong> of existing homes<\/strong> may be under insulated<\/strong> leaking<\/strong> up to 30%<\/strong> of the energy<\/strong> produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Polyurethane insulation<\/strong> can reduce heat loss<\/strong> by up to 80%<\/strong> and reduce energy consumption<\/strong>. It\u2019s also thin<\/strong> so people won\u2019t lose space<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Pre-fab homes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many homes<\/strong> of the future will be \u2018pre-fabricated<\/strong>\u2019 \u2013 meaning pre<\/strong>–made<\/strong>. Structures such as walls<\/strong> are created off site, and then slotted<\/strong> together<\/strong>! Covestro\u2019s PUREWall<\/strong> structures can be put up in half the time<\/strong> of regular buildings, saving energy<\/strong> and money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pre-fab homes<\/strong> could be used to house refugees<\/strong>, or after natural disasters<\/strong>. They could also replace the world’s 200 million slums<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super-realistic interactive holographic visuals<\/strong> will appear in our urban environments<\/strong>. Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> is a popular example of AR<\/strong> today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glasses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Using AR glasses<\/strong>, we can find extra information<\/strong> about our environments. Doctors<\/strong> could wear them to help see<\/strong> ‘inside<\/strong>‘ patients<\/strong>!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virtual reality<\/strong> (VR)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

VR<\/strong> will be more commonplace, allowing us to immerse ourselves in TV<\/strong> and video<\/strong> games<\/strong>, visit<\/strong> galleries<\/strong>, and travel<\/strong> virtually<\/strong> to different places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GREEN ENERGY<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

By 2050, the global demand<\/strong> for electricity <\/strong>is estimated to increase<\/strong> by 57%<\/strong>. So how can we power our future cities cleaner<\/strong> and more efficiently<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wind power goes big!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wind turbines<\/strong> are an eco-friendly<\/strong> way of generating<\/strong> electricity<\/strong> \u2013 but if they were bigger<\/strong>, they could be even more<\/strong> efficient<\/strong>! Thanks to new strong<\/strong>, lightweight<\/strong> materials<\/strong>, blades<\/strong> can be the length<\/strong> of an entire<\/strong> football field<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to store<\/strong> all this renewable energy<\/strong>, more efficient batteries<\/strong> will be developed that can power our cars, homes and cities. China<\/strong> has already begun installing
 large-scale<\/strong> battery storage facilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Experts believe we will be able to power cities with 100% renewable electricity<\/strong> by as early as 2040<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Covestro manager Rebecca Heil tells us about some of the exciting new ideas that the materials company is working on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi Rebecca! You set up Covestro\u2019s idea.lab<\/em>, where scientists come together to solve problems. What are some of the biggest challenges facing the future? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Definitely climate change<\/strong> and the environment<\/strong>! Right now, the world still relies too much on fossil<\/strong> fuels<\/strong> for our energy<\/strong>, and landfill<\/strong> for our waste<\/strong>. We need to become more environmentally aware<\/strong>, fast! Scientists<\/strong> across the globe, including at Covestro, are working on ways to help.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some recent ideas Covestro has come up with that will help the environment? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to new materials, we\u2019re changing wind<\/strong> turbines<\/strong> and making them much bigger<\/strong>. Larger wind turbines means more<\/strong> energy<\/strong> produced! We\u2019re also working on lighter<\/strong> and more<\/strong> efficient<\/strong> solar<\/strong> panels<\/strong> so that one day we could power our aeroplanes<\/strong> and cars<\/strong> with sunlight<\/strong>! And we\u2019ve got 20<\/strong> Research<\/strong> &<\/strong> Development<\/strong> projects<\/strong> focused on new ways to recycle<\/strong> plastics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Is it true you are recycling greenhouse gases?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes! Carbon<\/strong> dioxide<\/strong> (CO\u2082<\/strong>) is a gas<\/strong> which is known as being problematic for the climate<\/strong>. But we are working on ways to use it as a raw<\/strong> material<\/strong>. That\u2019s very exciting, because it means we will conserve<\/strong> fossil<\/strong> resources<\/strong>. CO\u2082 is already successfully being used in mattresses<\/strong>, sports<\/strong> floors<\/strong>, car<\/strong> parts<\/strong> and even clothing<\/strong>. And the process has the potential to be applied for many other products. This technology<\/strong> could be one
of the big breakthroughs<\/strong> to help make cities<\/strong> of the future<\/strong> more sustainable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cool! Can you tell us about more things we can expect to see in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Materials will become lighter<\/strong> and more natural<\/strong> looking<\/strong>, with sweeping curves<\/strong> and rounded<\/strong> shapes. They\u2019ll also become \u2018smarter<\/strong>,\u2019 with in-built electronics<\/strong>. Thanks to 5G<\/strong>, everything from rubbish<\/strong> bins<\/strong> to street lights<\/strong> are expected to become \u2018smart<\/strong>.\u2019 To do this, they\u2019ll need to be able to share<\/strong> data<\/strong> using<\/strong> special tiny transmitters. That\u2019s what Covestro is creating at the moment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What about entertainment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently we worked with the Research & Development Team at Sony<\/strong> to create a holographic-like display<\/strong> \u2013 similar to the sort of thing you\u2019ve probably seen in sci-fi movies<\/strong>! It can project floating<\/strong> images<\/strong> within a 360-degree<\/strong> direction while being transparent<\/strong>. This was possible thanks to a special photopolymer film<\/strong> developed by our scientists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow! What do you like best about your job? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love that my work is aimed at improving<\/strong> the planet<\/strong> and people\u2019s lives<\/strong>. It\u2019s very meaningful and I get to work with others who also really care<\/strong> about what they do. Working with the latest<\/strong> technology<\/strong> is inspiring, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you have any advice for kids who want to work in science?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was a kid, I thought all scientists wore white<\/strong> coats<\/strong>
and spent their days looking through microscopes<\/strong>. This isn\u2019t true at
all \u2013 there\u2019s so<\/strong> much<\/strong> variety<\/strong> in science. From art<\/strong> to marine biology<\/strong>, science is everywhere<\/strong>! Talk to as many people as you can to find out about the science that\u2019s in their lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, if kids enter the Covestro Future Cities competition (right), what kinds of things will you be looking for in their designs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m looking forward to seeing really creative ideas<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019d love to be surprised and think:  \u2018I never thought of that!\u2019 Carefully drawn<\/strong>, beautiful posters will always stand out, too, especially if they\u2019re a bit different<\/strong> in their style \u2013 be brave<\/strong> and adventurous<\/strong> in the way you approach it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
