This will put <strong>extra pressure<\/strong> on <strong>Earth\u2019s resources<\/strong> \u2013 which is why we need to come up with <strong>environmentally-friendly<\/strong> ways to <strong>construct buildings<\/strong>, <strong>travel<\/strong> and <strong>generate power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Let\u2019s take a look at some of the high-tech <strong>sustainable solutions<\/strong> being developed by materials company <strong>Covestro<\/strong> for the <strong>cities of the future<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HIGHTECH TRANSPORT<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Technology<\/strong> could make<strong> travel safer<\/strong>, <strong>more sustainable<\/strong>, and <strong>more efficient<\/strong> than ever before. In <strong>2017<\/strong>, <strong>Nagpur<\/strong> became <strong>India\u2019s<\/strong> first city to have an electric transport system. By <strong>2030<\/strong>, the country aims to have <strong>100% electric public transport<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">PUBLIC TRANSPORT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Buses<\/strong> of the future will be <strong>sleek<\/strong>, <strong>smooth<\/strong> and <strong>sustainable<\/strong>! And to solve the <strong>climate emergency<\/strong> we need to make these older buildings <strong>energy efficient<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovative insulation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Covestro<\/strong> has come up with a <strong>material<\/strong> called <strong>cardyon\u00ae<\/strong> which is made from the greenhouse gas <strong>carbon dioxide<\/strong> (<strong>CO\u2082<\/strong>).<br>The innovative CO\u2082 technology could be used to make <strong>insulation<\/strong>, which would not only reduce CO\u2082 in the atmosphere, but <strong>prevent future emissions<\/strong>, too. Wow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u2014 In the <strong>USA<\/strong>, up to <strong>90%<\/strong> of <strong>existing homes<\/strong> may be <strong>under insulated<\/strong> <strong>leaking<\/strong> up to <strong>30%<\/strong> of the <strong>energy<\/strong> produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u2014 <strong>Polyurethane insulation<\/strong>&nbsp;can <strong>reduce heat loss<\/strong> by up to <strong>80%<\/strong> and <strong>reduce energy consumption<\/strong>. Structures such as <strong>walls<\/strong> are created off site, and then <strong>slotted<\/strong> <strong>together<\/strong>! Covestro\u2019s <strong>PUREWall<\/strong> structures can be put up in <strong>half the time<\/strong> of regular buildings, saving <strong>energy<\/strong> and <strong>money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Pre-fab homes<\/strong> could be used to house <strong>refugees<\/strong>, or after <strong>natural disasters<\/strong>. We\u2019re also working on <strong>lighter<\/strong> and <strong>more<\/strong> <strong>efficient<\/strong> <strong>solar<\/strong> <strong>panels<\/strong> so that one day we could power our <strong>aeroplanes<\/strong> and <strong>cars<\/strong> with <strong>sunlight<\/strong>! But we are working on ways to use it as a <strong>raw<\/strong> <strong>material<\/strong>. That\u2019s very exciting, because it means we will <strong>conserve<\/strong> <strong>fossil<\/strong> <strong>resources<\/strong>. CO\u2082 is already successfully being used in <strong>mattresses<\/strong>, <strong>sports<\/strong> <strong>floors<\/strong>, <strong>car<\/strong> <strong>parts<\/strong> and even <strong>clothing<\/strong>. And the process has the potential to be applied for many other products. This <strong>technology<\/strong> could be one<br>of the big <strong>breakthroughs<\/strong> to help make <strong>cities<\/strong> of the <strong>future<\/strong> more <strong>sustainable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cool! Can you tell us about more things we can expect to see in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Materials will become <strong>lighter<\/strong> and more <strong>natural<\/strong> <strong>looking<\/strong>, with sweeping <strong>curves<\/strong> and <strong>rounded<\/strong> shapes. They\u2019ll also become \u2018<strong>smarter<\/strong>,\u2019 with <strong>in-built electronics<\/strong>. Thanks to <strong>5G<\/strong>, everything from <strong>rubbish<\/strong> <strong>bins<\/strong> to <strong>street lights<\/strong> are expected to become \u2018<strong>smart<\/strong>.\u2019 To do this, they\u2019ll need to be able to <strong>share<\/strong> <strong>data<\/strong> <strong>using<\/strong> special tiny transmitters. That\u2019s what Covestro is creating at the moment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/04\/connected-cities.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/04\/connected-cities.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-181471\" width=\"199\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/04\/connected-cities.jpg 658w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2021\/04\/connected-cities-300x280.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about entertainment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently we worked with the Research &amp; Development Team at <strong>Sony<\/strong> to create a <strong>holographic-like display<\/strong> \u2013 similar to the sort of thing you\u2019ve probably seen in <strong>sci-fi movies<\/strong>! It can project <strong>floating<\/strong> <strong>images<\/strong> within a <strong>360-degree<\/strong> direction while being <strong>transparent<\/strong>. This was possible thanks to a special <strong>photopolymer film<\/strong> developed by our scientists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wow! What do you like best about  your job?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love that my work is aimed at <strong>improving<\/strong> the <strong>planet<\/strong> and <strong>people\u2019s lives<\/strong>. It\u2019s very meaningful and I get to work with others who also really <strong>care<\/strong> about what they do. Working with the <strong>latest<\/strong> <strong>technology<\/strong> is inspiring, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have any advice for kids who want to work in science?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was a kid, I thought all scientists wore <strong>white<\/strong> <strong>coats<\/strong><br>and spent their days looking through <strong>microscopes<\/strong>. This isn\u2019t true at<br>all \u2013 there\u2019s <strong>so<\/strong> <strong>much<\/strong> <strong>variety<\/strong> in science. From <strong>art<\/strong> to <strong>marine biology<\/strong>, <strong>science is everywhere<\/strong>!
