Elephants are known for their <strong>large ears<\/strong>, <strong>tusks\u00a0made of ivory\u00a0<\/strong>and their <strong>trunks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong>&nbsp;Elephants are the world\u2019s&nbsp;largest land animal! Male African elephants can reach&nbsp;<strong>3m tall<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;weigh between<strong> 4,000 -7,500kg<\/strong>. African elephants have large ears\u00a0<strong>shaped like the continent of Africa<\/strong>! Asian elephants\u2019 ears are smaller and\u00a0<strong>shaped like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/country-fact-file-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India<\/a><\/strong>. Cool, huh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong>&nbsp;You can tell a lot about an elephant by looking at their tusks! Elephant tusks&nbsp;<strong>never stop&nbsp;growing<\/strong>, so enormous tusks can be a sign of an old elephant. Both male and female African elephants grow tusks, but only&nbsp;<strong><em>male&nbsp;<\/em>Asian elephants&nbsp;<\/strong>grow them. A tusk-less adult elephant is likely to be a female Asian elephant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong>&nbsp;Until recently, African Forest elephants were thought to be a&nbsp;<strong>subspecies&nbsp;<\/strong>of the&nbsp;African elephant, but new research discovered that they are actually&nbsp;<strong>a separate species&nbsp;<\/strong>entirely<strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;These elephants live in the tropical forests of&nbsp;<strong>Africa\u2019s Congo Basin.&nbsp;<\/strong>They have straighter tusks and more rounded ears than&nbsp;Savannah elephants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Elephant-Facts-Image8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Elephant-Facts-Image8.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Elephant-Facts-Image8-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6)<\/strong>&nbsp;These magnificent mammals spend between&nbsp;<strong>12 to 18&nbsp;<em>hours&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>eating&nbsp;<strong>grass<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>plants<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>fruit<\/strong>&nbsp;every single day! They use their long trunks to smell their food and lift it up into their mouth \u2013&nbsp;<em>yum<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7)<\/strong>&nbsp;All that eating means one thing, gang, an awful lot of&nbsp;<strong>poo<\/strong>! Each elephant creates about one tonne of poo per week, which keeps the&nbsp;<strong>soil&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>fertile<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>disperses tree seeds<\/strong>. Elephants also&nbsp;<strong>dig&nbsp;<\/strong>waterholes and&nbsp;<strong>create footpaths<\/strong>, literally changing the landscape around them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8)<\/strong>\u00a0In\u00a0<strong>Mount Elgon National Park\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/country-fact-file-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenya<\/a><\/strong>, a group of elephants use their tusks to mine for salt in\u00a0<strong>underground caves<\/strong>! Clever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10)<\/strong>\u00a0Sadly, elephants are in trouble. Many are killed by humans for their\u00a0<strong>ivory<\/strong>\u00a0tusks, because they\u2019ve come into conflict with communities or simply for sport. There are far fewer\u00a0<strong>Asian elephants<\/strong> than there are\u00a0<strong>African elephants<\/strong>.
